Suggestions for JU Forums?

Suggestions for JU Forums?

The new forums went up the other week, and the reaction has been decidedly mixed, with some very vocal opponents to the new format.

The goal with the forum upgrade was to have a consistent forum system across all the Stardock sites that was:
1. Faster (the old system was very slow under load)
2. More Stable (Fewer server application errors are a good thing!)
3. More closely resembled the "standard" sort of forum layout you see elsewhere on the 'net, making it easier for new people to get involved in the community.

The change was drastic, so I understand issues with readjustment. For some the readjustment has been harder than for others. So, for those of you who definitely do not like the new system, what suggestions would you have for improvement? Please keep in mind that saying "Bring the old forums back!" doesn't help. We're looking for suggestions that will improve the new forum system further.

Was there no consultation with keystakeholders such as "users" throughout the redevelopment process?

Yes - the ones who pay that is. The same forum system is used on WinCustomize.com and GalCiv2.com as well where it was received VERY well (particularly on GalCiv2.com). The traffic those sites get dwarfs JU so that was where the bulk of the input came in.  No offense to the people here  on JU but there's like a dozen or so regulars.

In short, we are trying to take into account the desires of JUers but the new forum system was not designed with JU in mind which is where the problem comes in.

I just think sometimes what is good for one site doesn't really meet the needs of another. JU isn't really informational the way a lot of the content on wincustomize is. Therefore wincustomize benefits from a strongly-categorized format that gets specific information in front of the person with ease. JU, at least from my perspective, is for people who are coming here to find stuff they WOULDN'T normally be looking for.

I agree wholeheartedly.

I've already mentioned in your last blog Mike to perhaps have the heading for each category colored differently, that is if you don't go with the ideas of making the subcategories less. That's most of the confusion for me. I do like that it's faster. It would be nice to see more recent articles than just those at the bottom of the page which can be difficult to scroll down sometimes. (good idea Whip)

I also like Trudy's idea that there be a place to just go and put photos so as to help loggerheads like me who can't remember how to post pictures. I don't have the time to take all the steps to do it and always mess up.

Isn't there a search feature on the forums? I thought I saw that Trudy. I like that I can click and see all of my replies, this helps me to go straight back to someone's blog instead of searching for it especially from those who do post pretty often.

Zoomba, I have posted two religious items and they have gone to personal computers - this after I selected the Religious Category? Is it possible for you to move them over to the right channel please I cannot seem to do it.

I clicked on Edit post and nothing happened at all, I cannot get in to the post to change the channel.

I've put in a request to allow users the ability to switch between sub-categories or rcent posts per category (like the old system).

That would be helpful. Thanks.

jennifer: That's a bug that crops up occassionally. I'm going to check on Monday to see what can be done about it. I tried manually moving the posts, but it didn't work.

I liked how when I went back to a thread the last comment I read was bookmarked. That doesn't seem to happen now.

know because I once got so pissed off at WiseFawn for deleting my comments that I went back and deleted EVERY comment I had ever made on ANY of her threads, leaving just a '.' in place of them.

She was pretty upset about that, hehehe.
