Microsoft has finally done something right.

Download this beta if you can, it's quite amazing.

I went to try it yesterday because I've been following the blog of the UI people of Office 2007, but I got a server too busy error.

btw, "Vista download will be available soon", does that mean in a few day when the WinHec is being held? (availible for the public, not just MSDN subscribers)

I think Vista will be available in a few days.  Beta 2 is available on Connect for people who have had access to Vista before.  I just finished downloading Vista and will be installing it later today.

Can anyone activate their version?

I can't activate it.  From what I have been reading it's a problem with most people.  I will see if I can find a resolve.

have not tried to install, can i use this with office 2003 as well? or do i need to nuke 2003?
and if i do will it mess me up if/when i need to go back to 2003?

I installed it along with 2003. The only program which has to be uninstalled is Outlook.

My Activation worked tonight at 10:30pm Eastern. Interestingly...I had a new PC I was working on today and needed to activate Office 2003 and that would not work either. I ended up calling the big phone number. The phone automation system was working great. But that won't be any help with Beta 2. My guess is the whole internet system for Activation was down today.

I just activated mine now!
Thanks for the heads up ToeJo!
I agree with you wholeheartedly Dr Nick,
finally something worth seeing!
Off to play now...!

For those who like to read, there is a link "Windows Vista Product Guide" on this page http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/ which gives some good insight on what Vista is all about - from a general use standpoint.

Note - it is a 60 MB Word document.

Here is an interesting tidbit. This morning XP downloaded a security patch for Outlook 2003. I wish I had read what it was specifically. Anyway, I installed the patch and it broke Outlook '07. (I haven't uninstalled Office '03) When the patch was installed it appeared to overwrite a critical file for Outlook. I did a system restore and it all works again. Welcome to the world of Beta!

When installing Office 2007 it says Outlook 2003 must be uninstalled.

I signed up but never got the download link???

Hmmmmm... I installed it (chose the upgrade option), without uninstalling any Office2003 components. Installed, activated and works just fine here.

I did too Phoon. The only problem I am getting is with the updates for Outlook 03. I kept reconfiguring Automatic Updates to not automatically install but still had problems. I finally removed it. I guess there could be problems with sharing a .pst file between 2 programs.

amazing stuff - a brilliant job. The only problem I have is with outlook conflicts. the advice appears to be to uninstall any non 2007 version

I have said this before.  Office 2007 is not compatible with Outlook 2003.  You must uninstall Outlook 2003 or there will be problems.

I've installed Office 2007 and everything was going fine until I installed Windows Desktop Search 3 (Beta) as requested by Outlook. Whilst I am using Outlook there is no problem but if I try to close Outlook it appears to close but still shows in Task Manager seemingly taking up more and more memory. Has anyone else expereinced this and if so how have you rectified it?

I simply uninstalled the desktop search, as it is not necessary to run the 2007 beta. I just click the "Ask me later" (or similar) button upon launching Outlook each time.

I have run the beta with and without uninstalling Office 2003 without any issues, so have not seen any conflicts with the Outlook 2007 beta.

The desktop search adds 2 or 3 processes, and does seem to affect the system speed (of course, it is a beta).

Is it me, or is there no way of spesifying where to install it? I got a seperate partition I install my programs to but the Office installer basicly went ahead and installed itself to "program files" on the C drive. That drive is getting quite full, even though I install everything I can to the other partition.

Did you click the "Custom" button when the install began after extraction?

I used the "Install" button on the clean install, and the "Update" button (which replaced the "Install" button) when I installed on top of Office 2003. In both cases, there was also a "Custom" button, but I did not explore those options. There may be an opportunity to select the install path in that dialog.
