STICKY: Downloading Problems? Need Help? Look here.

We're here to help

Starting this week, tens of thousands of people will be jumping on to download gigabytes of game at around the same time.  This means, naturally, that some percentage of people are going to have problems.  This post is here to answer some questions and provide a place where Stardock support people can also help.

Don't worry! We will take care of you.

Stardock Central:

The most common problems we've seen people have revolve around two things:

(1) Someone who bought the game with one email address but has used a different email address to be on the forums.  That's fine, in fact, probably a good thing to do.  But it may confuse Stardock Central.  If you run into that, just email [email protected] with the subject:GalCiv Stardock Central problem.  They will fix you up.

(2) Some of our long time users have multiple accounts on our sites.  Same issue as above.

(3) The base game will download slower than the other modules.  In Stardock Central there is a menu called tools. Go to Settings, pick Internet and you can try a different server to see if that helps your download speed.  The base game should download at speeds from 30k/sec to 300k/sec depending on where you live, time of day, etc.  The bulk of the game, however, should download at whatever the maximum your connection is as we have set up mirrors world wide.  The base game is being set up so that we can update it very often. The  other stuff won't need updating (i.e. movies and such) so we can mirror that more.

(4) Activation. If you are downloading the entire game, there is an activation system built in.  Don't worry, you will be able to keep installing the game, even years from now, on your new systems without having to talk to us.   However, because the activation server is likely to get hammered, there may be some issues that will crop up.  Don't worry, just email support with the above. IF you don't get an answer within 1 hour, feel free to post in this thread.

(5) IF you had the beta, you can install on top of it and it should work fine.  But if you do run into problems, reinstalling is a possible solution (yea, that's a lame answer).

(6) IF you switch servers, there may be some modules that look like they need updating. Trust your own judgment. If you just downloaded the latest/greatest version and you switch servers and there's an update that you didn't hear about, it's probably due to minute differences in the time stamps.  This probably won't happen but given the sheer # of mirrors involved, it's possible.

(7) IF you purchased the retail version, you can skip Stardock Central entirely if you want and just download the "patch" from Downloads area.

(8) IF you are downloading on one of the first days, bear in mind how many other people are also downloading. Download resume should be working fine so if for some reason there's a server time out, don't panic, you can resume where you left off.

(9) MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE LATEST STARDOCK CENTRAL. 2.29A.374 (or later).

Thanks to the preloading we did last week, we don't expect any huge issues.  But due to me saying that, just now, that naturally means something will go wrong. For you.

We'll be camping out here, not just me but the support team, the development team, my mom, and of course the tech support guy who has "It's working fine here." set as a hot key.

Stay tuned and good luck!

I tried other 3 times, switching servers too, same situation.

Bad luck, I'll go home without downloading (its 9.30 pm here and I hoped to use the office connection to speed up things...). Will change my plans for the night. (my wife will be happy btw)

Ok. let's give the latest try...

IT WORKED!!!! (and I already phoned home to save a dish of spaghetti for me...)

Now its play time!

I have had a stardock.net account for sometime and the latest SDC installed.
All the games I have bought show up and I have installed them and updated them with no problem.
The exception is Twilight of Arnor.
I installed the beta when I pre ordered it.
When it was released I deleted the Beta, but now I cannot instal the final game.
It shows up in my list of games but there is no option to install.
Support have been no help. Telling me to set up an account and register it.

Sorry for the trouble, it's being looked into. For a quick fix, you can also use Impulse.

I just bought the expansion bundle, but I didn't have Stardock Central installed, so it did that and I restarted, and now I can't find Dark Avatar or Twilight of the Arnor anywhere. Help?
They're listed in SDC as modules of GC2, so click the + next to it and you'll see them.
That was it! It's installing right now. Thanks! :)

EDIT: Hold up. DA is still downloading, but I just checked Twilight and it says "Purchase" instead of "Install". Will it change when DA's done downloading?
Okay, I downloaded SDC after I bought the expansion bundle pack. Now I can only get Dark Avatar to about 2 or 3% before it stops installing. Any suggestions?
Does it give you an error, or an option to view the log when it fails? If so, what does it say?
I have a very similar problem, where the Dark Avatar expansion will completely download but when it starts to extract it will get stuck at: Extracting: DACampagnText_Genocide.xml .... 1% complete. It's been 1% complete for 18+ hours now (I left it running overnight). I have SDC ver 2.54.520 release build 167. I just recently installed GalCiv2 via the SDC download as well (but I think i originally bought it and installed from CD).

Runesil, give it a shot with Impulse and see if that works better.
Thanks. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling SDC, and then removing and reinstalling GC2 + expansions. That's currently running (takes a long time to download it all...) If that doesn't work i'll give Impulse a try. Thanks -Rune-

Still didn't work, so I tried Impulse and it's all sorted now. One thing I did notice was that when I then went back to SDC it asked to update Dark Avatar ... even though the version installed by Impulse was higher! (1.80g.103 vs 1.80g.100) ...anyways. Thanks for the support! -Rune-

I purchased GalCiv2 and installed it. Fine, so far. Then, I bought (directly from Stardock) "Dark Avatar". So rar, also fine. Then, I had to re-install both games --- several times, in fact. Finally, when I tried to re-install these games, GalCiv2 would not re-install. It would install to 96% percent, then freeze. Finally, I bought a new game, and it worked. So, I tried to re-install "Dark Avatar", but I could not find the installation code (?). Then, I tried to re-install "Dark Avatar" directly from Stardock's website (I understand that I have that right), but I cannot figure out how to re-install the game! Please, help me!

Are you using Impulse or SDC? In either case, try using the other.

Impulse is telling me my account expired...

I am house sitting for my brother and wanted to play a game of galciv2 TA and sofar everything I have tried has failed. I'll try SD central and hopefully have better luck with that. Why would Impulse say my account expired though? As far as I know there is no expiration date on stardock games....

I am having no luck downloading GalCiv II through stardock. I have recently downloaded SoTs with no issues.

When I select download on the GalcivII entry, the download starts just fine, but when the progress bar reaches 100%, the download just starts all over again.

I have what should be the latest stardock running.
I am running windows 2000, so Impulse is out of the question.

I have also tried to download the gc2.sdc as an archive, but the repeat download problem acts the same.

I am very much looking forward to playing the new Twilight expansion, but I have hit a serious roadblock here. Any help would be appriciated.

I have the same problem like Blorf. I have buyed the whole pack. Now i am downloading with Stardock Central, it is downloading gc2.sdc and when it hit 100% it just starts again with 0%, and after hitting 100% again all repeat. I am downloading from Germany, i tried both servers, US1 and US2, nothing changed.

Needs Help here.

edit: while downloading i have disabled firewall and my anti virus program.
