I think it has to do with cultural hegemony (look it up, it's a tricky word ). I would think it's unavoidable on any busy forum of medium size or more. It needs to be handled delicately, or it'll kill the community...
It's unlikely to be 'cultural hegemony'....but more simply individual ego, but yes, it's 'handle with care'.
Unfortunately when 'someone says something' it's an open opportunity for someone else to also say something.....and if it's not a 'contradiction'....it's an argument.
Sometimes silence is its own reward....
