Finally after several cakewalk/beginner games to learn what I'm doing, I'm trying a medium sized map on normal difficulty. I am trying to focus on trade and econ research, with the goal of building a strong economy while staying out of everyone else's way. I was holding my own for a while, ranked about midway in every category despite doing poorly in the initial landgrab. But now I'm getting picked on by the one evil race (I'm at work now and can't remember which race it was

Again, thanks, but I really, really want to keep this thread on-topic. And the topic is: a year after its release, GalCiv continues to get great national press like the article quoted above, and that will attract newbs like me to this game. I'm sure the good press will continue with reviews of AP. [Message Edited]
Tylertoo, did you already decide what empire to join
Thanks, but I think empires are not for me. 'Nuf said.
I usually keep it in the can, and read it when I'm relaxing.
:D :D Yes, I keep that mag in one bathroom and Computer Gaming World in the other. The only time for leisure reading these days.
Just got the new (May) issue of Computer Games magazine, and saw the Mods&Ends section has an item titled "Getting More Out of the Final Frontier" about the 1.2 patch of GalCiv. In short it says "The best 4x space simulation to hit the PC in years just keeps getting better..." and goes on to describe the tweaks of the patch. "There have been so many (upgrades) released since the game was published in March of 2003 that its hard to keep count." Nothing is mentioned of the AP expansion.
Also 1-2 months out of an election drop your taxes by half, then when the election is over raise your taxes again to your prefered rate.
Ah, very clever. Thanks for everyone's help! :)
You definately have to wait until the next election
How long between elections? Is this a fixed length?
Make sure you bump up morale before the next election,
I'm pretty flush with cash now. What's the surest way to bump up morale big time if dollars are not a concern? I have already built things like Entertainment Network on all planets.
Did you try the suggestion of offering war as a gift?
No, but its
A good trick is to build SB's along your trade routes. Attach trade modules to the star base and increase your trade income. Or you can build a SB in your sector where you own a system and keep adding mining modules that increases your production, or military that increases your fleets attack power etc. Just plant a star base in your sector by pressing the (b) key and then keep adding more constructors as wanted.
Its funny, I knew starbases could increase production, mili
Both replies helped, thanks. I always thought a starbase had to be built on a resource!
1) In two games now I've had the same situation (small map, easy difficulty): I'm friendly with all races but one. I want to attack that one race, but it is basically located in a sector I can't reach with my battleship. I guess this is about my influence not reaching there or something. There are no resources left in between my region and my enemy on which to build starbases, no planets still up for grabs. The only thing between me and him are the other neutral or friendly races. What do I
That is great for Stardock. Wonder if they'll release the expansion as a stand-alone or it will require GalCiv?
Bumping a really great thread :D .
Tylertoo, yes. If you pre-order the CD-Rom version, you still get to play the beta.
Thanks for the info. Also: -Is the $19.95 pre-order price a discount, or will the price be the same after it goes gold? -Does AP overwrite GalCiv, or is it a completely seperate install? (I ask in part because I'm still new to the original game, and want to keep them seperate).
If I choose the CD-ROM pre-order option, can I still download the beta? I take it the only difference between the DL and CD versions is the shipping cost gets you an actual disk.
I take it from your post that "only" the editor is broken un 98SE, and that the game itself runs fine. Is this correct? Like you, I run 98Se and will be very disappointed not to be able to use the editor. This issue is holding me back from pre-ordering.
If you have it you can get a cheaper upgrade version, which is more like $36 I think.
Is this correct? $36? The purchase page on this site says $20 for pre-order. Does it jump up to $36 after release? I would love to pre-order, but need clarification on whether it runs on Win98SE. I have read here the editor in AP does not :(.
And it would also make sense if the editor worked with win98SE but it doesnt
What!!!! :sniff!: >:( (:( That is disappointing. Is this correct? The game supports 98SE but the editor doesn't?
Yeah, pretty boring stuff if you are under 40.
I'm over 40 and find the history of computer gaming fascinating. Thanks for the link, it was interesting reading. When I was in high school (late 70s) I took some computer programming and wrote a few games, including a football game that worked pretty well. We stored our programs on spools of paper with holes punched in them, which we kept rolled up with a paper clip. We then fed the paper through a reader for a t
is there anyplace that has a step by step walkthru to get going?
This is from the Senate Halls forum. I has helped me (another newb) in my first game: These are just few rules for the beginner players. Many of these ideas were created by strategist EBZero. 1-Start with a good planet PQ19 or higher (PQ= Planet Quality), when you start the game you click in your homeworld planet and you will know what PQ has. (if the PQ is too low hit Ctrl-N until you g
I have always felt that to reveal the tech tree was a kind of cheating on a certain level.
I can certainly understand that view. I take a different view of tech trees for two reasons: 1. I have very limited time to play any game, and a tech tree helps me explore a deep game like GalCiv more quickly. Those wrong paths are avoided, surely, but to me those wrong paths are just time wasted. 2) Some strategy games (like Civ II and SMAC, if I recall correct
Thanks for the tips Dave.
Go for # of creds over ### of turns.
I assume you mean go for a higher one-time payment rather than doled out over several months? Also, if 100bc for 0 months is a one-time payment, does 100bc for 1 month get me two payments?
Start slow 5 for 20, or 5 for 50.
Sorry, I'm dense. Not sure what this refers to.
Anyway, I had a few favorable responses to it, so decided to put it up for mass consumption for good or ill. Enjoy!
I said this in another thread but I'll repeat it here: great job, thanks for the hard work, you saved this newb loads of head scratching and wrong turns. Sticky this thread!
So I took about eight hours or so over a weekend and put this thing together. Maybe it will help some others as much as it did me.
This is exactly what I was looking for, and so thanks for all your hard work. Maybe the link to Brackard's spreadsheet should be stickied? I dont mean this thread, but maybe a post with that link. [Message Edited]
