I am a cynic because that way the world never lets you down--you're only ever pleasantly surprised. (I know I thought of that, but someone else probably wrote it first. It sounds like the type of line that resides somewhere in the subconcious and then makes its appearance, only for the thinker to be told that someone else thought of it first. Stupid subconsci

Unfairman, I totally understand what you're saying. It's like there's a continuum and we're on opposite ends and there's no middle but we still have the same idea, if opposite, in common. And MasonM, you're the first person who's ever admitted to being similar. Thanks! Angloesque

Odd timing. My dad's truck was stolen last night from our driveway (no street cleaning thing there). He never liked moving to the city and this is about the last straw. Sorry for you--that sucks a lot. Maybe you can take the ticket to small claims court and explain the circumstances?

The the-dog-ate-my-homework excuse has been replaced in the last few years with its alter ego, the the-computer-ate-my-homework excuse. I would know. I invented most of the variations on the computer theme. And now that I'm a professor, it really ticks me off. Here's why: Computer-eating-homework: Only works on teachers who still think computers are too techn

I think Gerry Atrick (clever name, BTW) makes a good point. I saw part of that last night and my students are debating in classes these days. Their debates are very logical but not very emotional (pathos) so they're not connecting well with the audience. And as someone else noted earlier, I'd like to see a study done on unregistered or undecided voters. I'm undecided and I trust my logic far above my emotions: no amount of Bush landing on an aircraft c

I am also a grammar god(dess), though I think the alternate result of being a complete bastard of grammar was funny. Pleased to see such good company on JU.

My alter-ego is a caped woman who rides around on a broomstick dis-etiquettizing the world and pulling off the hairpieces of the likes of Dear Prudence and Miss Manners, and for the most part I think my alter-ego is a sensible woman. I call her Antietiquette. So what if your hosts ask you to take off your shoes when you come in the door, or if your kids aren't invited

To my dearest checkbook, It's been days since I've seen you, my dear friend. I know things haven't been going well with us--I keep trying to balance you and you keep not letting me. This latest episode is the vacation you decided to take April 14. Now you know I had to pay taxes this year, thanks to me working out of state and my state wanting income tax (blo

I was in Old Navy and she was the twitty salesgirl folding clothes in the dressing rooms. I walked in with one item and asked for a room. Actually, I walked in while she and two of her coworkers talked about the dumbest movies they'd ever seen before I finally got their attention. She said, "Oh, there's not a line" so I started walking to a room. Then she sai

Blockbuster is the only video store in our town, except Safeway and the library (where I do go occasionally), and though I hate to admit it, Blockbuster has a pretty good selection. I've done Netflix but the fact is I just don't watch enough movies to make it worthwhile, plus no matter how many you order, they've honed their practice so that you still only get about 3-5 newer DVDs a month. I think it's cost-e

Oooh, Suspeckted, did we grow up in the same town? Our local store also had the two movies for $2 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Awesome. => And there I've done it: officially reminiscing about the old days. Makes me old. KellyW, don't use it--I'm actually sending a variation of it to them in the hopes that their granite pocketbooks will send a coupon my way. Cheer

Dear Blockbuster video franchise, How do I hate you? Let me count the ways. I hate the way your movies cost $4.10, whether it's a new release or an old release for five nights. I hate the way you gave me a scratched DVD last time I was at my parents' place and my dad and I decided to have some Bond-ing time, if you know what I mean.

Hey, me too. I didn't get into the books right away, but now I am and it's hard to wait. I use phrases like "constant vigilance" and joke about how I wish I could write up notes on the chalkboard with a wave of my wand to my students.

Too bad. I love my mac. But --and no offense-- I don't do all kinds of crazy programming stuff with it. I just do a bit of design and word processing and other miscellaneous programs. Hey, if you're serious about selling it...well, I can't afford even what you've put into it. But if you give it away, page me.

I guess I should step back for a moment. I do think customers should be polite, and I do agree that they help set the tone. Regardless of them, however, I think the onus of customer service is on the one providing the service. Secondary to that is my illustration of the bad customer service that pissed me off. I think no matter the kind of day the sales rep is having, a customer service representative should refrain from gossip, rolled eyes, a

Brief clarification: I said the changes in his actions show his character, not his changing character. But this is where my agnosticism really comes out. I'm not sure that God is perfect. It seems to me that he had a trial-and-error thing going on with the Israelites before he said "To heck with this, I'm going to let everyone in on who I am." Yeah, you'd want to hope he got it right the first time, but maybe he didn't, 'cause if he did I don't think

It must be a personality thing. I despise having to chat with people to fill a silence. I don't mind if it's significant conversation, such as "I'm sorry, the card scanner's running slow today. Is there anything else I can get you?" or even a complimentary "Wow, I love the color of this skirt you've picked" and I can say "that's okay" or "thank you" but I don't want a whole conversation. Those of you who are super sanquine won't understand that at all,

Well, they didn't plagiarize the same material--same copy and paste method, I mean. I kid you not, I've had one student turn in a poem she liked, then plagiarized it again when it came time to write her own. I have a hard time feeling bad about that one.
