Actually I think that there is nothing bad in cartoonish style per se. In my opinion it matches the first alien art we got - the "o rly guy". Cartoons can also express various atmosphere - think - the Ugly Americans or Rick and Morty Shows. If this part of the game is moddable then wait for a month or so and you will get real life planet textures imported.
