No need for arbitrary rules like "other people research stuff faster," and other such nonsense. People don't like negative mechanisms
It's only negative for civ's that are ahead, it is positive for civ's that are behind. So it is, in the same sense, a positive mechanism. Helps to create more fair and balanced gameplay. Many games have things like this, and people do like them because they are completely unnoticeable. If every civ in the galaxy knows warp drive E
No, it wouldn't. The point of having the greater cost is that it slows them down for the moment. So you can (as an extreme example) match tech with them while they're busy investing in this weapon starbase. Yes, you'll have to go through the same slowdown if you go for that tech yourself. But you will have, for a time (before the bonuses from the new tech they're working on kick in), relative pairity with the other side.
AT THE SAME COST, A civ that controls 1/3rd of th
There is a "HowAIWoudlVote" field in the UPissues.xml that seems to govern the decisions... although not very well!
Culture-Bombing. Plain and simple. Jacks up my tourism income, allows me to rule over the UP, and I can trade vast swaths of those crappy IPs to get the rest of the galaxy to destroy anyone who poses a threat.
They should have UP votes more often... 52 turns usually seems way too long... perhaps twice a year would make things more interesting. I wonder if the other civ's votes are purely random or based off something? Since the civ's can't really 'understand the questio
when your being attacked by such a superier force you have to use everything you have. Including the coast guard
Do you all remember the TNG episode, where the cube was heading past Mars, and they sent the Mars defense ships (or w/e they were) in against them... there was like 3 tiny ships that attacked the cube and got blasted to oblivion by a few shots. That must have been the Starfleet Coast Guard there. Strange how Voyager (single ship in another quadrant wi
Guys, I think I have a solution: Do not have a highest level. Difficulty is primerily based on the AI's tax revenue, correct? Well, tax revenue seems to me like it could be increased indefinately. So, have a level after Suicidal where you can set the % increase as high as you want. This will make the game essentially have no upper limit to its difficulty (I realise that there is an eventual limit simply because you can only enter a finite number of digits, but that is so rediculously h
Why not? They "drastically" changed it from GC1 to GC2.
Drastic change from GC1 to GC2? If you assume drastic to mean they added 3 weapon types and 3 defense types from GC1's 1 weapon type and 1 defense type, then sure... but in reality combat essentially stayed similar. GC1 had a weapon roll from 0 to max, and defense roll from 0 to max and the difference was the damage. Similar method applies to GC2 for damage (although more complex). They should b
No, I did not. You originally argued that the GC2 combat mechanic was good, only the AI wasn't smart enough to use it correctly. I argued that the combat mechanic isn't good even if the AI could use it correctly, because it merely exacerbates an already existing economic disparity.
Well, the only way to fix that is to introduce a corruption model of some type, no other way around it. That would keep all civ's regardless of how many worlds they own more on a even level (
You mean my Space Monsters idea? Also it's not supposed to be funny, I tought that Space Monsters would be an interesting in-game element.
I'm not referring to your idea, the fact that Stardock tends to through space humor into the game, and the GC1 Space Shark Space Monster was an aspect of that humor. The different names of space monsters I found to be interestingly amusing in a good way. Don't take it personal. You know, as discussed before, Space Sharks chasing
Yes, but on Suicidal, it has an automatic research advantage. If the AI knew how to play the game better in any area, it would always win. That doesn't make this mechanic a good one.
Well of course it has an advantage, it has all kinds of massive advantages. Yet Suicidal is not even difficult to beat on a regular basis using regular planetary builds. If the AI knew how to play better, it would make for a more interesting game, one that might take some actual
While they're still cheap in TA, the extra ~50% factor that's applied to "military" techs is applied to defenses as well
Even so, though, on top difficulty, when my research slider is set to 75%, I do about 7% of the total research in the galaxy (just regular planet building). By end game, I can research down almost all the way to the end of a defensive tech tree in 1 turn. It would probably take the more powerful AI's less than 10 turns to reach near the end
Has this thread gotten the attention of the Stardock people yet?
I would have to say they read most all these threads on a regular basis. They probably don't reply here, since it's usually hush-hush on upcoming games until they decide to release an official statement. If they haven't read any of this, they are probably waiting to finish Elemental, in which they will print out a huge stack of all 1200 replies (by then)... and read them 1 by 1 while sitting around

The Mega Events I believe have some sort of factors involved in determining if they occur, so I've heard. Some people, depending on their playstyle have said certain Mega Events happen quite often, while others with different playstyles seem to rarely see them, but see others. I for one, have yet to encounter the peacekeeper mega event, yet get dread lord event probably once every 5 games. Also, I believe (Sole Soul said this) that setting Extreme Planet Quality occurance (during game

I know for ToA at least, that setting civ's during game setup (Technologists, Populists, etc) does stay during the game. They will not choose their own. I'm not sure about the other abilities though, as it is somewhat more difficult to tell. I would assume DA is most likely the same way.
Also, have a small module you can add to your ships called a Space Shark Repel Unit
I was trying to remember the names of those things, I loved seeing a super powerful space shark pop out of nowhere. You could also have a Space Shark Scent Unit module: it would make the Space Shark chase you around (like catnip to a cat), you could then lead it into enemy territory, destroy your own ship, and let it go wild on the enemy.
Look at Elemental. Supposedly it will use the same basic mechanics and engine as GC3.
It's hard to visualize it since Elemental looks so much different, and it's basic gameplay is even fundamentally on a different level. Although unit creation is quite fascinating being able to create knights based on needing to have a source of horses, trained men, leather for saddles, iron for swords shields and armor... Stardock is really on to something with some great ideas there.<

I caught the Alterians in my current game with 6 transports on the other planet in their homeworld system (not Alteria, the other little planet), but the population was only 4+ billion. If they did decide to go to war, they wouldn't even be able to launch them all with a full 1 billion complement.
A Base Ship is a Starship/Starbase Hybrid
If they don't make orbital shipyards, being able to build a Starbase Shipyard would be a vaiable idea. It would manufacture military craft, just as a planet does. And you can place it wherever you want. Although to keep something from becoming overpowered, they would have to be 'fueled with supplies' from asteroid mines, and would take quite a bit of mining production to build any sizable ship in a normal period of time.
