The global warming nutcases refuse to recognize that the planets climate is always in a state of change and always will be. They are incapable of understanding that they have never shown that anything other than this natural cycle is occurring. And yet they claim science is on their side and ridicule anyone who attempts to point out the problems in their often silly beliefs. My favorite is that the north pole will melt and flood the world. That ice is already in the wa

I once had a great idea for how I could help save the Earth from the dreaded "global warming" when I heard Al Gore explain his concept of the "carbon footprint". I live in a small apartment... Al Gore has several mansions each of which uses more electricity that my apartment even when he isn't using them. So if I were to burn down one of Al Gore's mansions... I'd have such a massive black hole of a carbon footprint that I would be in the red for life! I think it&
Personally, I'd like to know if it's just naming a planet or if you also get to choose any of the attributes of the planet. There's a difference between a planet that some thought went into customizing vs. just randomly naming a planet. It'd be nice if each of the founders planets had some reason to go there other than just trying to find the random planet you named.
Oooo... Can mine have a cave w

The probes are too hard for the early game, but there should be something like them to create more space encounters in the early game before you are encountering the races. The Spathi has an easy time with both the probes and the Khor Ah you encounter early... but it takes considerable knowledge to just realize that is the case. The Zog Fit Pik can defeat the Ilwrath,,, although it is not particularly easy and probably also requires more knowledge than a new player has to realiz

Oh, more on the ships... In some cases one ship simply can't beat another. For example there doesn't appear to be a way for the Spathi to hit a Yehat. The Yehat's shield has enough charge to block all 3 missiles no matter how you stagger them. There are other examples like this. It should always be at least possible to damage the other ship. Star Control does an amazing job at creating an illusion of balance where, really, there is none.&nbs

I spent last week playing SC2, since I hadn't played it in almost 25 years. Here are some of my thoughts after playing the original again... 1) I agree with people saying they don't want to see timed quests. My game ultimately went very badly when for some reason the Khor Ah went on a rampage and moved around the map wiping out a lot of races whose quests I hadn't done yet. I like to see changes on the star map, races occasionally moving an

Darn:-( After watching some YouTube videos it seems to be more of an RTS. Everything moves very slowly. Its hard to tell for certain, but I am pretty sure it is point and click mouse control, which is a completely different thing. Its really an RTS and not a tactical space combat game. Still looks interesting, I will still mess with it a little this week just to get a better idea of what it is. it's just a different kind of game than SFB/Star Control/Su

That's the thing. These scenarios are very simple. Supermelee dueling is already most of what you need to make them. A single programmer could have a rudimentary hockey going in less than a day. A puck. Player can pass/shoot puck with button 1 (loses primary weapon while holding puck). A goal on each side of the map. Map boundary bounces ships/pucks instead of the disengagement zone in supermelee. A score on top of the screen. The othe

I don't really care if it has achievements or not. I never really pay attention too them. They seem to be a record of inevitable milestones. But modern gamers seem to like them and most games have them, so why not. I'd rather have 1 more quest in the full game than acheivements, but if they are expected these days its not like it matters that they are there.

We are getting supermelee, and I will enjoy playing that a lot. More than most. I am a top down space combat junkie. A nearly limitless well of useless information:-) I'd just also like to have the other classics of the genre, it's been a long time since anyone made a game like this and it would be a shame in my mind if it didn't include at least the classic, most fun scenarios of the genre. I've actually been thinking about the idea of using

Maybe single player, but online there hasn't been a good top down space combat game since Subspace and that was 20 years ago. This genre could be very successful in multiplayer but nobody has ever tried. I think It's better than first person shooters, a lot more fun. It won't work as a mod, because there are no similar games online I think it needs to be part of the initial release to have any real chance of taking off. You need to capture the initial star

Actually there hasn't been a top down space combat game made in many years. There is an opportunity to have a successful multiplayer and it would be very little work since they are already doing supermelee. The adventure game could be great but no matter how great it is it lasts for 2 weeks and then the game is forgotten. Hockey is forever:-) I will be dissapointed if there is no base defense or hockey, I would play them for years. You guys aren't under

Yes, monsters would also add variety to the encounters. Instead of running into the same 6 enemy ships all the time there could be some monsters too, kind of like the probes in SC2.

I wouldn't mind running into some Star Trek-like "space monsters" like a giant space ameoba or some squid like thing.

Us SFB players actually have a pretty deep understanding of the map size issue, I actually made an earlier post about this subject. It works just fine without the wrap around, in fact SC is the only such game to use a wrap around screen. The wrap around effectively created a "closed map" of relatively small size. It sounds like this new SC has a fairly large closed map (a "solar system"), which is essentially an open map due to it's size. There are two potentially
The slippery slope in that case would be to try and emulate StarControl - I mean that is a game that is an action-adventure-space-opera-RPG with puzzle elements. It does a little bit of everything. I think what made StarControl 2 great was the utter dedication to what is fun while also conforming to the limits of what could be done at the time (and within the budget available to the team). If Stardock made a faithful "StarControl

I didn't say all space RPGs. I said you could call these types of games "SFB games" in the same way people call RPGs "D&D games". There is a lot more SFB in the games you've played than you probably realize. There is a lot of SFB in star control. "Hellbore cannons", the Airlou is an Andromedan, the Ilwarthi is a Romulan Falcon Mauler, the Chenjsu has an SFB designed photon torpedo. Master of Orion is an unlicensed SFU game. Most of the really go

I understand what you are saying, but I'm not saying they should get rid of supermelee. In fact, one idea I had but hadn't mentioned is that you could easliy make all three of these scenarios retain the supermelee point system. When you run out of ships you are out, if all players on one side are out the other side wins by default and the game resets. It seems particularly cool for hockey too me, as it provides an alternate means of play of being "bashy" to knock pla

It's not Starflight. Just like you can call any RPG game "a D&D game", all these types of games are "SFB games", it's just that Star Fleet Battles never got the credit for all the games in inspired like D&D did. All of these types of games owe their original heritage to SFB. http://www.starfleetgames.com/
I understand what balance means. SC ships are unbalanced, but in the meta SuperMelee game of "kill your opponent", they are balanced. However, when the goal changes to something else, balance is removed. You admitted that yourself when you say that players will choose certain types of ships for different game rules. That is not balanced.
This is just wrong. Changing the goal does not remove balance at all
