spocks - While there are some skins out there that people will charge for there are many more free skins available from both Trillian and DeviantArt. It's not a requirement to pay to use skinning. [Bad Translation] Tandis qu'il y a quelques peaux hors là de cela les gens factureront là sont beaucoup plus de peaux libres fournies par Trillian et DeviantArt. Ce n'est pas une condition de payer pour utiliser peler. They are working on getting the application localized. [Bad

I think people have thrown laws into the equation. Elwin has thrown around Copyright and Patent and EULA and many others have mentioned the same along with DMCA. I find it funny that everyone harps on the fact that it's WRONG for Trillian to use AIM but justifies their use by claiming they use it for another ad-generating service (ala ICQ, or MSN). Morals are subjective I guess. Note that AOL makes no mention of Trillian's hacking of ICQ or the potential security risks involved in connecting wit

I think if we are going to argue moral high grounds then it would reflect that AOL has a moral obligation (and legal) to open their network to interoperability. I think it's very hard to argue morals in reference to a company such as AOL/TW. In the end who's moral compass are we going to use to judge this debacle? AOL/TW's? The Moral Majority? The Christian Coalition? Jesse Jackson? Osama's? Legality and morality are sometimes on opposite ends and morality is very subjective, while we might be a

Garoo, Okay good points. I do think that Adobe will lose some money (i.e. students, people who might be willing to save for the product, delayed purchase because they have a pirate copy (the "I'll buy it with my tax check" people)). I had not thought of the cost to the other Photo/Art programs out there, but it is a valid point. Thank you for making it. Statistically yes advertisers could argue the point that 1mill users are on Trillian but AOL could just as easily argue that their is

Elwin, again you are missing it. Cranking out a hundred copies of Photoshop and distributing them would indeed deprive Adobe of the potential profit per license. You can't put a monitary value on what AOL is "might be" losing because it can't be defined. For example AOL can't say "You're using clientX" all they can do is create an exploit that they hope will render clientX unusable. If they can't say how many people are definitely using clientX than neither can their sponsors and therefore ad re

Elwin, by that logic I'm stealing when I use the clicker to switch channels during a commercial on my TV or when I fast forward using the vcr or when I skip look into the table of contents of a magazine and skip over the 20 pages of ads just to get to the content I want. What about if I purposefully show up late to a movie to skip the commercials or only listen to public radio. Am I stealing when my mind just zones out during another ignorant commericial or when I immediately scroll a web page s

The majority of ads are still just ads for AOL service and given that there are utilities and hacks already widely available to strip the ads from the AIM client itself the argument doesn't really hold. Additionally AOL charges per active user for advertisement space, not based on what client is being used. And finally there are already clients using the TIC-TOC protocol that communicate with AOL and do not consume ads by design, AOL is not shutting them out. This whole issue is about co

TheGreenReaper, the problem with that argument is that AIM is listed as FREE and FREEWARE on every site I've ever seen not ADWARE. AOL never says that it's ad-supported ANYWHERE. AOL very neatly hides the ad aspect on it's frontpage for AIM, the secondary page does show a screen print with an ad but it's such a generic item people could easily misconstrue it as a function of AIM and not a seperate ad (i.e. if they didn't know what talk back live on CNN was). AIM's site mentions "free" all over t

I have one last friend that I haven't moved off of the AOL network yet. She's just so damned stubborn. But once she's off it's C-YA to anything AOL. I've moved 11 people off that idiotic system and I'll keep encouraging people to move off/stay away from it. People wanna talk about preditory business practices, lies, fraud, and general hypocrisy they need to be talking about AOL. It's getting harder and harder to boycott these crap companies anymore because they have their hands in everything.

I think Stardock and specifically Brad has said time and time again that programs like hoverdesk and nextstart are not "competing" programs but complimentary programs. Stardocks line is that these programs provide functionality, although somewhat similar, different than what the object desktop suite offers. Plus this site is a community site and would fail if it started blocking out "competing" products.

I have to agree. You can create a huge marketing campaign that really sells your product up big time and it can be the best product in the world but at the end of the day if the service and customer care is not there you can fall flat on your.... I worked for a paging company that was in a significant amount of the US market. They had very comptetative pricing, some huge accounts, massive marketing campaigns, and did quite well in keeping employees happy. Unfortunately they missed big on cus
