Glad that you liked it! I've put an updated version online with two new governors: Sayathea and Salammbo. Grab it here: http://www.etherplanes.net/GalCiv I have updated the site too with in-game screenshots so you can see the result, as well as a screenshot of the interface itself. My favorite is Salammbo ;) ~SDC~

I purchased GalCiv online, and immediately fell in love with Stardock central. It's easy to use, and updating or purchasing new stuff is simply *too* easy - as Frogboy pointed out, that's the biggest advantage of online distribution. You sit at home and can have the game or software without having to go anywhere, and can even do some other stuff while it downloads. So if you see a game that you would like to have, you can get it even if stores are closed - and you may not buy it if you have to w

Cool, that's really nice! I prefer the less busy one. And thanks for the small tutorial on your site too :D

You can also enter a path to a folder with music files (like *.mp3) instead of a playlist file. Just type it this way in the playlist dialog: c:\music\placebo GalCiv will then play the files in that folder at random. I find that even easier ;) [Message Edited]
The principe you have described are good for higher levels.
That's good - I'll try it when I'm more experienced with the game mechanics. That's also one of the reasons I like GalCiv not being multiplayer: you would get crushed in every game without any military ;p
You may also need to bribe AI to declare wars between them in order to be their unique trading partner
This actually also works on lower difficulty levels LOL And thank
But you said you run the largest pop. That means you have the most worlds.
Indeed - a good starting position and very aggressive expansion are the key, as well as the first few techs that give you a pop growth bonus. Add the pop growth trade goods and you're about set. As you said, if you're one of the smaller races, you don't stand a chance.
Do you gift/bribe the AI? I can play a no-military game, if I keep grovelling the way the AI expect you (
I've had the last major surrender to me in 2189...really pi$$ed me off because it cut my score in half.
Heh heh... sounds like they did that on purpose LOL I have recently seen the torians surrender to the drengin - there have been stranger things, but what pi$$ed *me* off in this was that they were at war with the drengin, and that there were four other races they could have surrendered to that they were on friendly terms with :notsure:
#9 How to mitigate "bad"... make sure that your Military Rating is always #1 or *near* the #1. If your military is much stronger then the computer, it will leave you the heck alone.
That may be right, but I never build any military at all in my games except in the late game when the excalibur becomes available - and everybody leaves me alone. On the condition that I'm leading in tech and population (those seem to be the major components)...
The Drengin ten

Unpostable in the library due to technical problems, I have put my Alternate Governors package on my website. If you're tired of the default GalCiv governor, you'll definitely like it :) Especially as you don't have anything to do - just install and choose your new governor. What happens if you already have a Terror Star when the UP disallows them? Is the whole base destroyed, or just the terror star part removed?

Dark Rain, I see you're having fun programming and hacking away (I do too, but not for the same game » Etherlords / www.etherplanes.net), but there is something I don't understand. The developers of the game must have some utilities they used to create all the files the game is made of - why can't they make those available? I mean okay, it's probably some rough stuff, but I would even be willing to pay for it if it can enhance my gaming experience, and that's what this is about, r
that lets you look through all of the different techs, buildings, and ships, along with descriptions, stats, and tech tree for each
There already is a library of sorts in the game - just open up the research window, and click on a tech: you get its details, and you can click on subsequent techs and see which are required to get it. The only thing missing here is a global tree view that can give a quick overview of the techs.

The standard governor graphic in GalCiv annoyed me, so I made a few new ones - but it buggered me even more to have to manually copy the files each time I wanted to change them, so I created an interface that does exactly that. For each governor there are three styles - one for each alignment in the game (good, neutral and evil). The interface lets you choose a governor and your alignment, then you just have to click 'Go' and the corresponding graphics are copied to the GalCiv Gfx folde

In my last game, I had *the* starting location: with the 'uncommon' habitable planets setting, I had a class 19, a class 26 and a class 16 planet in the sol system. I was stunned, but the game was nigh unwinnable. Considering I was playing with all AI players on 'normal', this may seem strange, but the fact is that starting position was in a corner, so I was only able to send my colony ships out as far as two sectors - just enough to secure two more small systems. I told myself

Strange... sometimes, they don't surrender at all. In my latest game, I had conquered all but the Altarians and they had just three undefended systems left each surrounded by two to three Excaliburs. If that's not a hopeless situation I don't know what is. But they would not give up. I had to send transports to conquer each of them. Probably did it on purpose the little buggers... At least the Torians had the decency to surrender to me when they had only two planets left. Beat

MoM!! I still play that from time to time (with DOSBox it even runs under XP) - if the sequel is good, I guess I would even buy it several times just to be on the safe side (you know, the CD might just vaporize or something.) ;p
#78 by Walldorf2000: This definitely is unrealistic. You must have very kind (or stupid) businesses in your country when they do have the same costs and wages independent of their incoming orders.
Unrealistic? Germany... monthly salary for employees, if there are no orders, they still get their salary. Running costs, like the rent for the office: stay the same. Where on earth do you live?

Hi Phoenix, You got an interesting point there - if I may expand on it a little: As I see it, when your planet is not producing anything, it's a little like a company that does not have any projects to work on - what do you do with your employees? you send them on vacation, tell them to take care of some company-internal tasks that you don't usually take care of... but your spending stays the same. This means that you can't really cut down your costs, but you can stil
