Music Review: Alien Ant Farm "Attitude"

Alien Ant Farm

Attitude
Album: ANThology
Year: 2002

Dryden Mitchell jerks his girlfriend around in the insensitive "Attitude."

Anxious guitars open the single, setting a curt tone. Its followed by churlish drums. In the first verse, Mitchell says he doesn't think clearly and does things which puzzle his girlfriend. He says he's a trainwreck and they have to take a break from each other.
"Maybe I act on confused behavior/Maybe waves crash like semi trailer/Maybe I'll spend my off time without you/It seems like we need our own space."

In the pre-chorus, he admits to neglecting her to brood by himself. However, he likes having her around. She's a calming presence in his life. But when she offered her support , he yelled at her to get away from him. After realizing what he had done, he would apologize profusely and beg for her forgiveness.
"And all this time I wasted away/I don't feel good unless you stay, stay, stay/And all the times I chased you away/Simply to catch back up with."

In the chorus, she breaks up with him. She tells him she's through trying to figure him out. Mitchell, angry that she's leaving, snaps that she can be lonely from now on. He doesn't care. Besides, he thinks she's being nasty to him. It's uncalled for.
"Your solitude is welcome, welcome/Your attitude is welcome, welcome/Your solitude is welcome, welcome/Your attitude is welcome, welcome."

In the second verse, he says he's hit rock bottom. He sympathizes with her, adding that she thought he would open up a bit to her. He says if it were the other way around, he would feel as though he's being dragged down, too. He's the one guy who has thrown her for so many loops.
"All you see is red lights behind me/Maybe this isn't what you wanted baby/I don't blame you falling backwards/
No one's ever quite confused you this way."

In the pre-chorus, he notes that their relationship is based on how much they can hurt each other. He feels guilty for screwing with her mind.
"And all this time we wasted away, away, away/We don't feel good unless we're gray, gray, gray/And all the times I chased you away/I simply don't feel good."

The chorus is sung again.

In the bridge, he answers her retort that he ruined her. He tells her great.
"You are welcome, welcome, welcome/You are welcome, welcome, welcome/You are welcome, welcome, welcome."

Later, he repeats that they both knew it couldn't last forever. They were both self-destructing.
"All this time, we heard alarms/Come to find, we fell apart/This whole thing has crashed down, crashed down/All this time, we heard alarms."

The chorus is sung again.

At the end, he repeats the beginning of the bridge.
"You are welcome, welcome, welcome..."

Mitchell loves his girlfriend, then he can't stand her, then he loves her again, and can't stand her. However, his empathy for the situation comes off like a ploy. It's perhaps to see if she really does care. But when she's said that she's had enough, he lashes out at her. He says it's her attitude that's the problem. However, it's really his. His girlfriend is better off.

The music arrangement is like wet cardboard. It's not only plodding and irritating, but it lacks any coherence and balance. It's a frustrating listen due

"Attitude" is a mind game that should be ignored.

While I didn't ever really pay attention to the lyrics, I actually recall really liking this song, musically.

I don't know the song, but I am fascinated at the very idea of a piece of music in which the drums can sound 'churlish'. Is that 'churlish as in boorish, surly, or difficult to work with? Drummers are obviously far more sophisticated and expressive creatures than they were credited with being in my day!
