New Computer Virus

I'm not sure if any of you heard about a new virus being released tomorrow which will crash all systems if given the chance.


If you're not aware of this, here's a heads up and some information I received via Email today.


EMERGENCY!!! If [email protected] adds you to your
MSN Contacts, DO NOT (I repeat: DO NOT) add it because
it's a virus that takes all ur
computer details. PLEASE tell everybody on your
contacts because if
somebody on your list accepts it then you get the
virus too!

There is a threat of a specific virus/worm that will activate on Feb 3rd. One of its names is BlackWorm.

Please update your antivirus definitions today if you haven't already done so.

This should include all your desktops, laptops, and don't forget about your home machines. If the update button on your UCF computer has the update button grayed out, it is being updated/managed by the department server and should be ok.

This is also a good time to do a backup of important files/research to a CD, DVD, tape, external hard drive, or a USB Flash drive.

     Your second half is a valid threat (as much as any virus is valid in any case) but the first half is the same email that has been bouncing around since the first breathless AOL'er got wind of a virus and decided to send out alarmist chain mails. Just change the name/yahoo ID/mp3/whatever boondogle people choose to insert in the legend. See also the Blue Star Tattoo chestnut that just wont die no matter how how ridiculous and unfounded it is.

 

Trust me, when they develop a virus that will (sic) "takes all ur computer details." you won't be hearing about it first in a misspelled email forward. These things are started by people who get a kick out of wasting bandwidth.

The first half I got from an international email friend, if it's a crock then I guess we're gullible.

The first email's language didn't ring any "bells" because of the local dialect spoken from the source and the spelling is sometimes off.

The second half is from my internal source and they usually are valid.

Whenever I get email warnings I always check them out to make sure because I know what goes on with people who have nothing better to do.

But hey, heads up are usually good to watch out for, even when they turn out to be a farce.
