Someone To Love Me For Me
Album: Spanish Fly
Year: 1987
Full Force complain that their fame has left them dateless in the sluggish "Someone To Love Me For Me."
An infantile piano starts the song, setting a self-pitying tone. In the first verse, Full Force say that their concert is finished. Another work day is over. However, they wish they had girlfriends to talk to about the concert. They curse the fame gods for the price they have to pay. They see the world as against them. Full Force feel like they have to live up to people's expectations of celebrity. Lisa Lisa, a starstruck fans, is crazy about the guys in the band. Full Force and Lisa Lisa say they want a significant other who will look beyond the stereotype and love them.
In the chorus, Full Force want to be normal people again. Lisa Lisa wants to be among the rich and famous. Full Force stress that they are human and not royalty that people think. They both plead that they have to have someone in their lives who will see the past labels.
In the second verse, Lisa Lisa wonders if she loves the idea of dating a celebrity. Full Force wonder if Lisa Lisa is only looking to become a celebrity herself. However, they believe she's the real thing and doesn't have an agenda. They explain they can have groupies whenever they please. Also, he loves her even though she's not a glamorous pop singer. But then it gets her thinking. Lisa Lisa is curious if he actually loves her or if he's looking for publicity. He's the best catch ever. Each say they need a signal from the other.
The chorus is sung again.
In the bridge, they both say this relationship will be the peak of their lives. They have bonded and now have a long-term relationship. They now realize love can last and is real. Lisa Lisa suggests marriage. Full Force vehemently agree.
An improvised section follows.
The chorus is sung twice, with Full Force urging everyone to sing it again.
A spoken section is next. Bow-Legged Lou tells Paul Anthony to give all the girlfriends and boyfriends, husbands and wives some inspiring words. Anthony responds that he was going to ask him to do the same thing. Then, he suggests that Lisa Lisa should do it. Lisa Lisa then lectures that everyone in a relationship should hang onto their significant other and never let go. Be certain the person loves the other, warts and all. If they start spending more time with the other partner's money, the other person should dump them. Full Force say she stated exactly what they wanted to say.
An abbreviated chorus ends the single.
There is absolutely nothing positive to say about the single. It's horrible from beginning to end.
Full Force want people to feel sorry for them. It's not because of the they got sick. But because they can't find dates. Well, a lot of regular people can't find dates, either. Welcome the world of the unentitled. Then, regular people have the audacity to like them and expect them to live up to the image.
The vocals from Lisa Lisa and Full Force are self-important and petulant. The spoken intro is indulgent and should've been edited out. Lisa Lisa fares the worst, though. She's condescending and famewhorish.
The music arrangement is bloated and theatrical. It mimics a gospel song, which plays into the celebrity-as-gods theme. It's presperous and should've leaned towards R&B.
"Someone To Love Me For Me" is the worst song about being celebrity. Listen at your own risk.

"End of another long show/And I search for the love of a lifetime/This is the best that you gave/Because stars aren't allowed to get lonely/My heart screams, I know now just let dreams be our master/Look past my frame, I'm in need of some laughter."
In the chorus, Full Force want to be normal people again. Lisa Lisa wants to be among the rich and famous. Full Force stress that they are human and not royalty that people think. They both plead that they have to have someone in their lives who will see the past labels.
"Oh, please let me live in your world/I hope that your eyes can see/That I need someone/To love me for me {Mmm), me."

"So you ask yourself/Oh, this feeling is it true from the heart/Was it my fame and glory/Why the stars in your eyes wrote the story/And if I want satisfaction/I can have anyone that I see/But why should I settle for less/When I need you to love me for me/Oh, so confused, is this real, do you love me/Give me the feeling you care endlessly, my love."
The chorus is sung again.

"Yes, this will be our finest hour/You taught me it was forever/Let's take this to the highest power/Oh, let's take it, baby, let's take it, baby."

"Hey, Paul Anthony/Why don't you say somethin' to all the lovers out there/Well, Bow-Legged Lou/I was just about to ask you to drop the same silence/Well, I got a better idea/Hey, Lisa/Why don't you tell it like you feel it/Well, I would like to say to all the lovers of the world/If you are in love with someone, I mean really in love with someone/Make sure that you hold on to that person/Make sure that person loves you for who you are/And not for the materialistic things that surround you/Enough said."
