Music Review: LeAnn Rimes "I Need You"

LeAnn Rimes

I Need You
Album: I Need You
Year: 2001

LeAnn Rimes is fond of her boyfriend in the gushy ballad "I Need You."

Tender guitars open the single, setting a fairytale tone. She says she could be living hand-to-mouth . She only needs the basic things to survive. She accepts that she will have to need food or a coat to be warm. However, her boyfriend is the one thing she craves. He is her rock and the one person she can trust to be honest with her about anything.
" I don't need a lot of things/I can get by with nothing/Of all the blessings life can bring/I've always needed something/But I've got all I want/When it comes to loving you/You're my only reason/You're my only truth."

In the chorus, she says loving him as natural as breathing or the rain falling down. He redeems her and is necessary for her. She feels protected in his arms.
"I need you like water/Like breath, like rain/I need you like mercy/From heaven's gate/There's a freedom in your arms/That carries me through/
I need you."

In the second verse, she says without him, she couldn't go on. He gives her strength. His love soothes her from her troubles. She is awed by him. She can't believe someone as wonderful as him exists. She feels lucky for having him in her life. She's fallen in love with him and leaving him would be a major regret. He's taught her so much.
"You're the hope that moves me/To courage again/You're the love that rescues me/When the cold winds rage/And it's so amazing/'Cause that's just how you are/And I can't turn back now'Cause you've brought me too far."

The chorus is sung twice to end the single.

First, Rimes' vocals are marvelous in the single. In the chorus, she reaches the high note effortlessly. It's crystal clear and powerful.

However, the single cannot coast on a couple beautiful high notes.

The music arrangement relies on her soaring vocals to make the song stand out. The guitars are humdrum and by the book.

It's the standard love ballad territory. Her significant other is her life and she can't exist without him. She was only a meager being before she met him. For Rimes, it's really pathetic. It's as though she had no other interests and she was worthless. She bought into the stereotype that if she was single, she must not be a good person. Unfortunately, ideas like do that exist. It's just terrible to hear it reinforced in song.

"I Need You" is a tedious ballad.
