So what's up with Valentines day?

It's a Hallmark holiday that I really don't care about. I guess my hubby is lucky because I don't get crazy over that stuff. However, it does give the kids something to look forward to during the post holidays time of year. But now that my oldest is in 3rd grade he is a little sick of being forced to give valentines to people he doesn't even like.

I know society is trying to be easier on kids these days with making everything "fair" in the classroom but I think we are doing them a disservice. Life doesn't really work that way. Perhaps the sooner they get used to that, the better.

Just my 2 cents.

And you know, aside from a few cooky friends, I've never had a Valentine.  It always seems to be a downtime in my love life when the 14th roles around, but for some reason, love being in the air just makes me happy.

I'm one of those creepy people that stares at couples canoodling and daydreams instead of silently cursing them for being happy.

Dharma, as far as the whole elementary valentines go, I have mixed feelings about it.

I would have been the child who never received a valentine if it weren't for the rule, and I do believe my heart would have been shattered (as it often was in elementary school, being homeless and dirty and extremely weird).  But, I also don't believe in sheltering children from the inevitable.  I'll have to think more on that. 

I would hate, in the present, to have to give a valentine to someone who didn't deserve it.

Actually that was me, JillUser. I think Dharma, Karma and I have such similar views on things that people keep mixing us up when reading our comments. It has happened quite a bit lately. I can't speak for them but I take it as a compliment

What's up with it?
Well, I dunno, but last I heard it was gonna drop by at 12:00AM on the 14th and stay for about a day.
I guess it plans on taking in dinner and a movie, maybe buying some flowers and/or candy, maybe a card. Maybe a little...well...you KNNNNNOOOOW! Then it was gonna leave at about 11:59:59PM.

Every day is Valentine's day as far as I'm concerned.

I don't really pay attention to it.

I like Valentines Day. Mostly cause I'm girly and I like flowers and chocolates and pink and red stuff with hearts. You know what's better than a Hershey's Kiss? A Hershey's Kiss in a PINK foil wrapper!

It's just an over-hyped holiday that breaks up the monotony of the year. My kids get to buy and hand out cards, they make me little construction paper hearts and love notes, my husband and I give them a Valentine's bag full of candies and toys, and my husband gives me a sweet card.

What's not fun about that?

Of course, I'm married, so I don't have the whole "do I need a boyfriend at Valentines?" thing going on. I can't tell you how happy I am to no longer be a teenager stuck in high school.

I guess I'm just one of the guys who dislikes seeing everything so commercialized. And this will be my 19th year alone on this particular day. Ah well, I'll just go running with my dog.

coming from someone who never had a valentine for valentine's day I definately know what you mean. And I'm a female to boot. However, I think it's a nice holiday for those who are together and it promotes spending time with the one you love ( in my case my son this year) and I think that CAN be a good thing. But it does seem to put undue pressure on those of us that aren't in relationships. So... live on Valentine's Day, but leave us single people alone!

When I was in grade school, back in the dinosaur age.., we could give Valentines to whomever we pleased and plump little ole
me didn't get as many as little Nancy with her blond curly hair, blue eyes, and pretty clothes....
Then we HAD to give one to everyone, so if you weren't liked, you'd get an ugly one, or a mean one, like with a pig on it.......

Now...... What's Valentine's Day?
well one could share it with a senior in a nursing home, or an animal shelter...or donate an hour at a food pantry..

I think people tend to forget that Valentine's Day doesn't only have to be about romantic love.

Even during the time when I didn't have a "sweetheart", I always enjoyed giving Valentines to the people I care about--sister, mom, nieces, students, etc. Of course it's going to be all the more special now that I do have a sweetheart, but I still intend to give pieces of my heart to everyone I love (how corny sounding is that).

I have no shame in admitting I like Valentine's day...yes, of course you should be showing Love everyday (just like you should be showing the Christmas spirit of peace everyday), but I like that there's a day I can show it to many in extra special ways.

Good point! I used to love making Valentines for my parents when I was little and then in college I absolutely loved getting a Valentine care package from my parents. It's a good day to do a little something special for anyone you love.
