When Boys Talk
Album: Last Night A DJ Saved My Life
Year: 1982
Rose Marie Ramsey learns her date kissed and told in the peevish "When Boys Talk."
Debonair synths open the single, setting a sociable tone. When Ramsey went to a party, people started whispering the moment she arrived. At her job, her co-workers were giggling and mentioned how her date went. She found out that her date has been telling everyone about how he had sex with her. She also found out that he has a reputation for lying. The rumors have brought her unwanted attention. Guys keep coming up to her, asking her for a date. They say he was the type and they were too blind to see it.
In the chorus, the Ramsey says men discuss their last conquests, not anything of substance. Sex is all they think about. They say men are empty.
In the second verse, Michael Cleveland is telling his friends what happened. He says it was going great. He proudly says the girl was easy. He didn't have much to pretend much at all. He boasts that she said that he was the best she'd ever had. Then, they had sex all night. She had multiple orgasms. He was excisted to find out that she wanted to meet with him again.
The chorus is sung again.
In the third verse, she is appalled to find out that he said she prostituted herself. She calls him a famewhore who only wants to be the center of attention. He needs to shut up. She's not into casual sex. She warns him that if he continues to lie, she will say he has a small penis and only lasted a minute. She says she's unafraid of him and needs to steer clear of her.
The chorus is sung again.
In the bridge, she threatens him not even say her name again.
The debonair synth plays for the last minute and a half of the song.
The single suffers from a couple major faults. First, it's nearly six minutes. The third verse, final chorus, and synth solo could've been edited out. It's too much filler for a song that doesn't require any.
It's not without a few bright spots. The synth creates a smoky, after hours feel. It blends well with the breaks where the woman lets out breathy noises . Those two sections alone could make an excellent dub single.
Immaturity and generalizations also mar the single. Cleveland shouldn't have lied about sleeping with Ramsey. He was finally able to get the unattainable girl. It made him look good and boosted his self-esteem. However, he probably didn't realize it would get back to her.
Ramsey is rightfully miffed. Because of one bad date, people will think of her as a slut. No matter how many times she may refute it, some people will still believe it. Out of bitterness, she classifies all men as liars and attention-starved horndogs. However, it's not fair. It also makes Ramsey appear to be spiteful and to hold a grudge.
"When Boys Talk" can't communicate its point or sort its issues in a logical way.

"You shot your mouth off/Boy/And now you know I'm the talk of the town./You shot your mouth off/Boy/You been spreadin' those rumors around/You shot your mouth off/Boy/And now I find that I'm not alone/You shot your mouth off/Boy/And then it's something I should have known."
In the chorus, the Ramsey says men discuss their last conquests, not anything of substance. Sex is all they think about. They say men are empty.
"When boys talk/They don't talk politics/When boys talk/They talk about their kicks/When boys talk/You know what's on their mind/
When boys talk/You know just what you'll find."

"Hey/Let me tell you 'bout my date last night/'Cause everything really went right/Don't get me wrong I don't want to brag/But it was just money in the bag/Say money in the bag/She said I never had a lover like you/Boy, you know just what to do/And then I did it so many times/She started sayin' nursery rhymes/She say/Uh, uh, baby/She say/Uh, uh, baby/And when she asked to see me again/I couldn't wait to tell all my friends."
The chorus is sung again.

"When you're out on the street talkin' trash/You even said that I gave you some cash/Why don't you go on the radio/Or get your own T.V. show?/Don't broadcast to everyone/'Cause my love is one on one/I said one on one/One on one/I said one on one/But if you really think that you should/I'll just tell him that you were no good/And you know that I would/And you know that I would/My love is something special to share/So boy you better start to take care/And watch your mouth/Say watch your mouth/Watch your mouth."
The chorus is sung again.
