Music Review: Animotion "Obsession"

Animotion

Obsession
Album: Animotion
Year: 1985

Astrid Plane and Bill Wadmans scheme to ensnare the other in the rabid "Obsession."

Vigilant synths open the single, setting a jealous tone. In the first verse, Wadhams says he lies awake, thinking of what Plane might be doing without him. She owns him, even if she doesn't know it yet. He will submit himself to her, forgoing any independent thought. Even though she ignores him, he will continue to track her down.

Plane is driven to have Wadhams as her boyfriend. She will do whatever she has to do. She vows to get him, making him the ultimate prize in her life.
"You are an obsession/I cannot sleep/
I am your possession/Unopened at your feet/There's no balance/No equality/Be still I will not accept defeat/
I will have you/Yes, I will have you/I will find a way/And I will have you/Like a butterfly/A wild butterfly/
I will collect you and capture you."

In the chorus, both say they are consumed with the other. They are will be whom the other desires for one night of sex.
"You are an obsession/You're my obsession/Who do you want me to be/
To make you sleep with me/You are an obsession/You're my obsession/Who do you want me to be/To make you sleep with me."

In the second verse, he has captured her and is now holding her against her will. Wadham says that he spoonfeds the food and drink for her. He has gone mad, declaring that she has to remain at his house every day for the rest of his life. Plane, who is frightened, pleads to be let go. However, Wadham there is only option available: live with him.

Once Plane regains conciousness, she plays upon his ego in order to be freed. She tells him he is a handsome man. She thinks to herself that he's a creepy stalker that women should stay away from. Kidnapping her is something he will believe is a dream. He perceives her as unreal. Plane says he's crazy and deceitful.
"I feed you I drink you/My day and my night/I need you I need you/By sun or candlelight/You protest/You want to leave/Stay/Oh, there's no alternative/Your face appears again/I see the beauty there/But I see danger/Stranger beware/A circumstance/In your naked dreams/Your affection/Is not what it seems."

The chorus is sung again.

In the bridge, Wadham has descended into an insane man. Angry that his fantasy (Plane) is flawed, he loses whatever humanity he had. He turns psychotic, torturing her. He says that he's falling apart and is without any self-control. He's liable to do anything.
"My fantasy has turned to madness/And all my goodness/Has turned to badness/My need to possess you/Has consumed my soul/
My life is trembling/I have no control."

Plane, with resigned vocals, says that she will be his forever.
"I will have you/
Yes, I will have you/I will find a way/And I will have you/Like a butterfly/A wild butterfly/I will collect you and capture you."

The chorus is sung twice to end the single.

"Obsession" is effective due to the two persceptives. Plane views him as innocent, normal guy while Wadham is on a mission. They fall prey to their desires and it unravels them. For Plane, a playful flirtation has become a dangerous. She thought it would be a casual one-night stand. However, she discovers that he was not joking when he said that he was obsessed with her. At the end, Plane is trapped in his world, unable to get out. If she tries to leave, he could kill her.

Wadham is restrained until he finally has her. Then, he becomes unhinged. He knows he is doing something wrong. But he doesn't care. All he wants is her. Without her in his house, he is incomplete and a failure. If she leaves, it meant he was not good enough. His psychosis is brimming underneath his amorous vocals. Cold and shrewd, he knows exactly what he is doing.

The single's frank intensity and menacing sexuality is a dynamic cautionary tale.
