Music Review: Yaz "Only You"

Only You
Album: Upstairs At Eric's
Year: 1982

Alison Moyet misses her boyfriend in the mushy ballad "Only You."

Starry-eyed synthesizers open the single, setting a musing tone. Moyet is outside her apartment, watching the people walk to a restraurant or tourists snapping pictures. She's returned to it after having a fight with her boyfriend. She feels she's losing him and that they are drifting apart. However, she longs to be close to him again.
"Looking from a window above/It's like a story of love/Can you hear me/
Came back only yesterday/I'm moving farther away/Want you near me."

In the chorus, she says without his affection and caring, she feels alone. He's the only guy she's ever loved.
"All I needed was the love you gave/All I needed for another day/And all I ever knew/Only you."

In the second verse, she thinks about how he is still hung up on his ex. At first, she thought it was great that he was being open about his past relationships. However, he began to talk about her too much. She feels as though she's inferior and tries to think of ways of how she's better. Most of all, she would want him to forget about her. It's getting to the point to where she no longer wants nothing to do with him. She can't stand to see his face without thinking that she's not good enough.
"Sometimes when I think of her name/When it's only a game/And I need you/Listen to the words that you say/It's getting harder to stay/When I see you."

The chorus is sung again.

In the third verse, she says it's going to take her a while to get over the breakup. She's confused as to if he had any feelings for her. She can't handle being second best anymore. She thinks if he will actually know or care for the real reason she's leaving him.
"This is going to take a long time/And I wonder what's mine/Can't take no more/Wonder if you'll understand/It's just the touch of your hand/Behind a closed door."

The chorus is sung again to end the single.

The single's mismatched lyrics and arrangement cause it to fail. The synthesizer's sunniness gives the impression that it's a ballad about a true love. It's sentimental and corny. However, it's about a woman waiting for the right moment to break up with her boyfriend.

Moyet is torn as to what to do. It's something she can't believe she's thinking about doing. But she needs to do in order to feel good about herself again. Her woeful vocals convey her confusion and heartbreak. Moyet brings out the complexities of her feelings effortlessly.

With a different arrangement, "Only You" would've reached its potential.

True, but an excellent song nevertheless. I sang a wonderful a cappella arrangement of this song which had lyrical, haunting background harmonies. Good stuff, and proves your point. But overall, one of my top 30 songs of all time.
