Album: ANThology
Year: 2001
Dryden Mitchell's current romantic relationship has had many twists and turns in the plain "Movies."
Riled guitars open the single, setting a faux badass tone. He compares his relationship to the films he's seen. He and his girlfriend had great times like during a montage sequence. But once it become a narrative again, they fought. He randomly says that characters in movies go in the rain, get dripping wet, and stick their tongues out to show the rain. It has absolutely nothing to do with the two lyrics before it.
In the chorus, he says that her happiness is more important than his own. He tells her he will be fine. Then, like in the movies, they will say nothing to each other.
In the second verse, he says their relationship had lots of conflict. Both wanted to be in control and make all the decisions. Then, he randomly says that characters in movies are depressed during the winter. Again, it's not unrelated to the previous lyrics.
In the bridge, he says that they've dated only two years. However, they learned how to deal with personality quirks and compromise. Mitchell does an about face and says that their relationship is worth saving.
In the chorus, he adds that neither will fight for their relationship.
In the second bridge, he adds that they take a break it will be like weird and tough to figure to out like a science fiction movie.
In the third bridge, he says that if their relationship was a short fillm it focus on one pivotal fight that doomed it. Then, there would be a fantasy sequence of him thinking of how they would make up.
The second chorus is sung again to close the single.
"Movies" more like direct-to-video than a full-fledged song. It appears to be still be in the draft stages. The metaphor doesn't ever connect. None of the examples really make sense. All that's known is they are having a dramatic end to an otherwise dramatic relationship.
"Movies" doesn't go anywhere. It keeps repeating the same lines over and over again like well, a bad movie that talks down to its audience.

But once it become a narrative again, they fought. He randomly says that characters in movies go in the rain, get dripping wet, and stick their tongues out to show the rain. "At slow speed we all seem focused/In motion we seem wrong/In summer we can taste the rain."
In the chorus, he says that her happiness is more important than his own. He tells her he will be fine. Then, like in the movies, they will say nothing to each other.
"I want you to be free/Don't worry about me/And just like the movies/We play out our last scene."
In the second verse, he says their relationship had lots of conflict. Both wanted to be in control and make all the decisions. Then, he randomly says that characters in movies are depressed during the winter. Again, it's not unrelated to the previous lyrics.
"Two can play this game/We both want power/In winter we can taste the pain."
In the bridge, he says that they've dated only two years. However, they learned how to deal with personality quirks and compromise. Mitchell does an about face and says that their relationship is worth saving.
"In our short years/We come a long way/To treat it bad and throw away/In our short years/We come a long way/To treat it bad and throw away."
In the chorus, he adds that neither will fight for their relationship.
"I want you to be free....you won't cry I won't scream."
In the second bridge, he adds that they take a break it will be like weird and tough to figure to out like a science fiction movie.
"In our short years..And if we make a little space/A science fiction showcase."
In the third bridge, he says that if their relationship was a short fillm it focus on one pivotal fight that doomed it. Then, there would be a fantasy sequence of him thinking of how they would make up.
"In our short film a love disgrace/Dream a scene to brighten face/In our short years/We come a long way/To treat it bad just to throw it away."
The second chorus is sung again to close the single.
"I want you to be free...you won't cry I won't scream."
