Music Review: INOJ "Time After Time"

INOJ

Time After Time
Album: So So Def Bass All-Stars Volume 3
Year: 1998

INOJ is pleased to have a doting boyfriend in her smug cover of "Time After Time."

A snappy drum machine is added to the guitars (which are mock sad.) It sets a wishy-washy tone. In the first verse, the drum machine is promiment and it's mighty joyful. She's been awake all night, thinking how lucky she is to be dating her boyfriend. She remembers how desperate and lonesome she once felt.
"Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick/And think of you/Caught up in circles confusion/
Is nothing new/Flashback warm nights /Almost left behind/Suitcases of memories/Time after."

Later in the verse, she says that she's a bubbly person. Her boyfriend can't keep up with her. However, she gets times when she's upset and she can't handle all the pressure she feels. It feels like the pain will never end.
"Sometimes you picture me/ I'm walking too far ahead/You're calling to me, I can't hear/What you've said/Then you say go slow/I fall behind/ The second hand unwinds."

In the chorus, she is overjoyed that she has found a boyfriend who is so giving.
"If you're lost you can look and you will find me/Time after time/If you fall I will catch you, I'll be waiting/Time after time/If you're lost you can look and you will find me/Time after time/If you fall I will catch you, I'll be waiting/Time after time."

In the second verse, she knows that he will be like a puppy following her around. He will always make sure she's taken care of very well. She's hit pay dirt.
"After my picture fades and darkness has/Turned to gray/Watching through windows, you're wondering/If I'm OK/Secrets stolen from deep inside/The drum beats out of time."

Over the sound alike guitar solo, INOJ heaves some breathy sighs of relief.

Part of the first verse is sung again.
"You said go slow/I fall behind/The second hand unwinds."

The chorus is sung again.

She sings "time after time" about seven times to close the single.

INOJ's cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" is a mockery.

It's a vapid, high school version of the song. She has an agenda: get a sweet guy who will jump at anything she says and she can give as little as possible. She wants the adoration, the attention, and the gifts. However, she doesn't have any intention of showing her boyfriend the same amount of love. He's just there to tell her how pretty she is and hang around on her arm.

Her phony vocals, with their put-on sadness and innonence, only reinforce her uppity attitude.

The only positive aspect is Cyndi Lauper got some money out of it via royalties.
