Encouraging Debate

I had a very interesting, very intellectually stimulating "live" discussion with an individual from JU last night. We disagreed pretty fundamentally on the topics we discussed, but when all was said and done, it was a pretty cool conversation. Neither one of us "converted" the other, and the individual gave me several very insteresting, very compelling points for discussion.

And so, I got to thinking: while it occasionally happens on my blog, there are several good, compelling articles I've written where almost no discussion takes place. I would like to make it very clear that, if the comments on my articles are not disabled, I encourage, and welcome healthy debate. Sure, I may strongly disagree, but if you hold an opposing position just as strongly, you should, frankly, respect that.

Despite what you may have read or believe, I rarely blacklist anyone. When I do, it is almost always because the attack got personal, on my end or theirs, and that I need a "cooling off" period, or that the individual is basically a troll and not really a healthy contributor to my blog. My reputation for blacklisting has come about because, in all but a few situations, the blacklisted individual was offended enough to feel it necessary to blog about it, and I was offended enough by their indignation to respond and thus "out" myself as the blacklister. because most of my blacklist has thus become public, there's a general perception that I do it more often than I do.

There are some individuals on here with which I STRONGLY disagree. And they know it. In fact, there's kind of a running "mini-feud" going on as we speak with a particular blogger. But the individual, though almost diametrically opposed to my position, is one who I respect because the debate never becomes personal. I can think of several individuals who fit that classification.

So, if you disagree, post away. If I didn't want dissension, I wouldn't have posted the article in the first place. If you have a well thought out point, you just may help me reconsider my position. And by bringing your POV out in the first place and allowing me to respond, I just may help you reconsider yours. The net result is that we BOTH grow.

Well, thanks. I talk better thank I write....mostly because I can lock myself in the closet and hide from my kids!

I agree as well. I dont mind it when others disagree and I hope others dont when I dont agree with what they have to say either. I think the problem starts when people start the mudslinging. Sometimes on here, people cant stand it when you disagree with them or vice versa and all of a sudden...personal attacks start flying...etc. Goes from a good debate to a flaming rant gangbang....kind of makes it pointless to make the thread in the first place after a while because then the replies get to the point where they no longer have anything to do with the main point of the thread in the first place.

eh, blogging is mental masturbation and the endless, nobody ever changes their mind debates are that times ten...times a hundred...having spent (read: wasted) time arguing with folks here and on other sites like Dkos, it just seems rather a rather pointless exercise.

then again, that's my opinion, which isn't even good to fertilize your roses with, being just words on a screen.

I think debate is fun and will sometimes even play devil's advocate and debate a point I might not in RL agree with....just to flesh out my own ideas about it and that of others.

In my observation of JU...as long as you write about things that are not of a personal nature people can disagree and move on...but when you write about something people actually may have lived...well emotions flare and wa la, serious dislike issues come about.

But I think JU is a great place to debate, to learn and just hang out occasionally.

As you folks know, I am a newbe to this sandbox of verbal meditation. As Tova states, share to much, "wa la". But, share inappropriately or to little and people don't know what you stand for. Once again, as Tova states some throw opposing comments with deeper motives on a subject. To parallel that it's not below me to play a liberal, but before going to such drastic lengths, I state my intention because otherwise my positions appear backwards to my consistent nature. That's it....no more quoting Tova....

I prefer self-control over ignore or black list buttons (which I didn't know existed here). It isn't in my nature to get angry or fear difference and label what I don't know or verbally attack characters, as some warrant. When people appear to be loosing control, I just move on. If they persist without antagonism, then I pay closer attention to their behavior and just limit my comments. I save the fight in me for more germane real life situations.

My wife persists on asking "why I put myself in the mix of diversity and predisposed mentalities". All I can answer with is diversity brings intrigue, understanding and self-awareness. I suppose I could pass on places like JU and with time find a site where for the most part people resemble what I stand for. But, exchanging thoughts with a mirror doesn't foster broader thinking, creativity and social flexibility, qualities I value as I evolve.

Actually you have carried yourself very well so far.  Welcome to the sandbox!

Is THAT why you got so mad and blogged about it when I put you on my blacklist? (*evil grin*).

But seriously, yes, in a sense, you're right. I don't expect you to change my mind, but I appreciate added insight.

I don't see it as pointless at all. Now, the two hours I spent this morning playing video games? THAT'S pointless!

months ago, I felt differently...like I said, i spent some heavy time here (where I'm in the minority), on Dkos (where I'm generally in the majority), and on a few other sites, and I realized...I'm blogging about people blacklisting me or some such nonsense?! Meh. I think this is the first article I've made more than one comment on in weeks hehe, not from apathy but just from lack of time.

video games are the real devil, I understand that -- gah, I picked up Morrowind for 8 bucks at wal-mart (I never pay retail for video games) and spent the next week doing nothing but work, morrowind, and occasional food and sleep.

Me too Gid. There are times I don't have the time to comment. You're one of those writers who I have to read when I'm not in a hurry in order to digest and respond in a thoughtful manner. Otherwise it's all gibberish! I agree that debate is good, respectful, intellectual debate, not mudslinging! [even though that can be fun sometimes, if two is playing together not against each other]

on Dkos

Oy Vey!  One of those!  Blog on there!  They think you are a conservative, but we know the truth!

I'm disappointed, Myrrander. I would think, despite all the problems with blogging here and elsewhere, that there are some obvious cognitive benefits provided by blogging and taking part in debate.

*the sharing of arguments from new individuals (sometimes sparse, I know)

*the continued researching of your own arguments and the tangental benefits of reading and engaging in critical thought

*the relief to unburden oneself of one's own opinion

Come ,on, buddy, you to, can blog again.

Maybe even, while listening to SOAD.

No, just that you were not one of them.

Yeah, on reading that again, it sounded way too maudlin, didn't it? I haven't been blogging lately because of time restraints, but then again, I suppose I could always MAKE time. Man, current events just don't inspire me to write a thing. I get so grumpy when I blog constantly about politics, it's like every 6 months or so I just have to either blog about dumb stuff or just not blog at all.

>No, just that you were not one of them.

Dr. Guy ... you are an absolute moron. I really wish I had the power to switch you with them,
have you wake up one day
an Iraqi
a Pakistani
or whatever ... see how you hold up.

You are truly a product of this system ... the perfect "sheeple". You are bereft of simple compassion, humanity?

But you will wake up soon enough ... in due time

I am awake, you are still catatonic.  And of course a coward.

No, just calling a coward a coward.  You flatter yourself if you think I am pissed.  Why would I be pissed by a coward?

Nice inflated ego I see.

Precise word usage. Excellent.

I understand your reason(s) for not blogging, and I have felt the affects of some of them. The current political climate isn't exactly inspiring.
