Music Review: Brandy "Afrodisiac"

Brandy

Afrodisiac
Album: Afrodisiac
Year: 2004

Brandy's boyfriend has awakened her sexual desires in the busy "Afrodisiac."

In the intro, Brandy "ha's," first soft and then it gradually gets louder. She then harmonizes with herself over a sophiscated electro R&B beat. It sets a stylized tone.
"Ha ha ha ha ha/Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha/Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha/Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha."

In the first verse, Brandy says that she is willing to make herself available to him at anytime. He doesn't have to worry about bothering or inconviencing her. She's all about him. He cares about her and helps her through her problems. He's also great at satsifying her sexually. She enjoys hanging out with so much that she doesn't want to go back home. She wants to spend every moment with him. Without him, she feels uneasy and frustrated.
"Whatever you want, I got it, Papi/Don't hesitate, holla at me!/
What I'm lookin' for/Is simple, you see/Love and support and sexuality/When I'm with you, I don't wanna leave/I need you just like air that I breathe/But when I'm not with you, I'm missing my peace/I got a lot inside I need to release."

In the pre-chorus, she says that he stays attuned to her needs. She is on cloud nine whenever she is with him.
"You fulfill my every desire/When I'm with you, you take me higher (Wooo woo whoo)."

In the chorus, she says that her boyfriend is the only man who can turn her on. She craves him and intends to be with him forever.
"You're my afrodisiac/You're the only one I'm needin'/When I go, I'll come back/'Cause there is no way I'm leavin'/You're my afrodisiac/You're the only one I'm needin'/
When I go, I'll come back/'Cause there is no way I'm leavin'."

In the second verse, she vows to not let the relationship fizzle out. He's the only guy so far who know what she likes in bed. It's not something that can be cured with an aspirin. When he's gone, she's tense and irritable. She starts to spazz out. She tells herself that she has to relax. She's never had lustful urges this powerful before. With him, the lovemaking has to be special.
"There is no way you are gettin' away/I need your love every day/Medicine can't cure the way that I feel/What I need is my inner fill/Being without you, it's makin me ill/Stressin' me out I need to chill/Something this strong, gotta be real/
Nothing or no one, show my skills."

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

In the bridge, she says she can't get enough of his good looks. It's all she thinks about. She gets antsy and can only stand a day or so without any affection from him. They kiss passionately and pulls him closer to her.
"I admit that I'm a prisoner of your sex appeal(sex appeal)/I can't seem to find a way to escape how i feel(how i feel)/I can't wait no longer, please come give a dose to me(dose to me)/Breathin's gettin' stronger need you now, close to me."

The chorus is sung twice.

The intro is repeated again.

The electro R&B gets a solo (with an orchestral element added to it) to end the single.

In "Afrodisiac," Brandy is in the honeymoon stage of her sexual relationship. She's not concerned about communication at this point. She knows he's gorgeous and is only focusing on the superficial aspects. She seems to be thinking it has potential to be something more serious. There's a hint of it. But mostly, Brandy's having fun. Given she has a daughter and dissolved a "spiritual" union, it's easy to buy her new image as sexual, adult woman. She transitions into the role with ease.

The music arrangement for the single is unique. It's R&B dance with a slight Meditteran feel and a firm electro beat. Unfortunately, it's buried underneath Brandy's robotic vocals. Her vocals are a major problem. They are computerized and mechanical. They do not sound the least bit natural at all. Overcorrecting her raspy vocals to make them crystal clear weighs down the single. It's noticeable that it's been Pro-Tooled to no end and it's distracting.

"Afrodisiac" is a game of 'spot the vocal mistake.'
