Why Don't We Fall In Love
Album: All I Have
Year: 2002

Amerie tells her platonic male friend that she's in love with him in the impulsive "Why Don't We Fall In Love."

Nervous strings and an edgy bass open the single, setting a now or never tone. In the first verse, she says that she's been debating whether or not to tell him. She's been dealing with the possibility of him not talking to her ever again or that things may be weird between them if he rejects her. She wasn't interested in dating him. However, she's realized she has a great guy in her life that she's been ignoring for so long. She's been thinking about him a lot lately. She's decided not to hide it from him. She says they have to get together as soon as possible or risk losing the chance forever.
"So many things I'm goin' through/So much that I wanna do/It startin' to become so clear to me/Tomorrow ain't really what it seems/So many days I've thought of you/It's about time you knew the truth/Got to act quickly, you and I/
We fall in love, so many reasons why."

In the chorus, she approaches the subject of dating with care. She inquires gently that they should have a romance. It's the next logical step. They are already friends and trust each other. It's important to her that they give it a shot.
"Why don't we (so why don't we), don't we/Why don't we, why don't we (yeah)/Why don't we, why don't we fall in love (why don't we fall in love)/It's so many reasons/It's the only thing that matters to me/Why don't we fall in love."

In the second verse, she says a burden has been lifted off her shoulders. He's the only person she wants to remain in her life. Before, she was neurotic in relationships. But with him, she doesn't have to guess or try to read his mind. He's the first guy she's ever really loved. She says she wants to take the risk and forget the humilation which may follow. Romantic feelings have been developing between them for a while.
"It takes such a load off to let you know/That you're the only one I never want to go/Think I never did know what to do/A love I never felt, now I feel with you/Why don't I just swallow each and every ounce of my pride/Everything you do I wanna feel again/Ain't no use for us to pretend."

The chorus is sung again.

In the bridge, she says that they have a future as a couple together.
"Come with me/
Tomorrow we're guaranteed love/Baby, let's be/Baby, let's be."

The chorus is sung again.

Amerie adlibs "ohs" and "no's" until the end.

R&B singles are usually five minutes long. There are the longwinded verses, drawn-out bridges, and choruses which are repeated ad nauseum. Thankfully, "Why Don't We Fall In Love" is short and sweet. Its 2 minutes and 45 seconds is a welcome change in a genre that doesn't know when to shut up.

Amerie's vocals have a bit of paranoia to them. She wants the relationship to happen now. She needs to say everything she has to him. She's fearful that he may not want nothing to do with her. It's a real fear. Amerie is able to imply by rushing her vocals slightly.

Although the nondescript "Why Don't We Fall In Love" music arrangement is riskless, Amerie has potential to be popular in the mainstream.
