One Moment In Time
Album: 1988 Summer Olympics Game
Year: 1988
Whitney Houston hopes to be in the spotlight briefly in the histronic "One Moment In Time."
Reflective strings start the single, setting an inspirational tone. She wishes to be recongized one day for her hard work and peristence. She knows there are many people in her life supporting her. The day is coming, but she doesn't know when. She has to face adversity. There were times when her self-confidence plunged and she was exhausted. There were ups and downs. However, her determination keeps her going.
In the chorus, she wants to be in a moment where everything she worked hard for is accomplished. Her dreams are reachable and are so close to coming true. She is striving to meet her goal before time runs out. In that one moment, the burden will be lifted and she will be relieved and happy.
In the second verse, she says she has become an achiever in life. She has received the highest honors. Nonetheless, she wants the ultimate prize. She will night and day to get it. She has thought of how she will do it and already has some ideas. Now, she just has to take the opportunity to do it.
The chorus is sung again. However, it's edited. The first three lyrics are gone.
In the bridge, Houston encourages everyone else to have the same bloodthirsty ambition as she does. In the time they are mentioned, however, briefly, they will be remembered.
The chorus is sung again.
At the end, the theatrical strings explode. Houston proclaims that she will be free. It goes from the over the top to over the New York skyscrapers, Canada's CN Tower, and into Europe.
In "One Moment In Time," the need for glory takes over Houston's life. Ambition and drive are great qualities to have. However, Houston takes it a wee bit too far. By the second verse, she's ready to cut anyone's throat and sabotage their chances, if needed.
In context of the Olympics (and given the controversy regarding the female ice skaters a few years back), confirms the emotions in the song. It's an approriate theme with unintentional nasty undertones. Competitive and vicious with a smile, "One Moment In Time" is a combative ballad.

"Each day I live/I want to be/A day to give/The best of me/I'm only one/But not alone/My finest day/Is yet unknown/I broke my heart/Fought every gain/To taste the sweet/I face the pain/I rise and fall/Yet through it all/This much remains."

"I want one moment in time/When I'm more than I thought I could be/When all of my dreams are a heartbeat away/
And the answers are all up to me/Give me one moment in time/When I'm racing with destiny/Then in that one moment of time/I will feel/I will feel eternity."

"I've lived to be/The very best/I want it all/No time for less/I've laid the plans/Now lay the chance/Here in my hands."
