Last Night A DJ Saved My Life
Album: Last Night A DJ Saved My Life
Year: 1982
For Reggie and Rose Marie Ramsey, music is the cure for heartache in the dense "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life."
After hours beats open the single, setting a cavorting tone. Indeep say that yesterday night was the best night. In the background, the radio was turned on. However, the Ramseys were lost in their thoughts, wondering why another relationship had ended. Then, the DJ comes on the radio and tells the ladies get out there and dance their problems away. The DJ has convinced the Ramseys to head the closest disco. The Ramseys cannot resist his silky voice.
The Ramseys give the boyfriend a call. However, he doesn't answer. The sound effect of a phone ringing in the background can be heard. However, they think something is wrong with them for him to stop not care anymore. However, the music is a perfect distraction from the pain.
In the chorus, the Ramseys are grateful to the DJ for playing their favorite songs and giving them some much needed fun.
In the second verse, the sound effect of a car screeching to a stop can be heard. The Ramseys are about a block from home when thoughts of how much they were cheated on. He had girls in every part of the city. However, Indeep denied it, even though they knew inside the rumors were true. To get some relief, they turn on the radio and hear the DJ's voice again. It gave them the confidence to go into the club.

"Last night a DJ saved my life/Last night a DJ saved my life, yeah/'Cause I was sittin' there bored to death/And in just one breathe he said/“You got get up, you got get up, you got get down girlâ€/You know you drive me crazy, baby/You got me turnin' to another man."
The Ramseys give the boyfriend a call. However, he doesn't answer. The sound effect of a phone ringing in the background can be heard. However, they think something is wrong with them for him to stop not care anymore. However, the music is a perfect distraction from the pain.
"Called you on the phone no one's home/Baby, why you leave me all alone/And if it wasn't for the music/I don't know what I'd do, yeah."
In the chorus, the Ramseys are grateful to the DJ for playing their favorite songs and giving them some much needed fun.
"Last night a DJ saved my life/Last night a DJ saved my life from a broken heart/Last night a DJ saved my life/Last night a DJ saved my life with a song."
"You know I hopped into my car, didn't get very far, no/Because I had you on my mind, why be so unkind/You got your women all around, all around this town/But I was trapped in love with you and I didn't know what to do/But when I turned on my radio/I found out all I needed to know/Check it out
The chorus is sung twice.
In the bridge, the Ramseys recommend other women to heed the DJ's words."Hey, listen up to your local DJ/You better hear what he's got to say."
Michael Cleveland says he can solve any troubles a person has with the right song. If the womens' boyfriends are doing them wrong, all they need to do is get into the car and listen to his set. Then, women will forget what was bothering them. The sound a toliet flushing can be heard."There's not a problem that I can't fix/'Cause I can do it in the mix/And if your man gives you trouble/Just move out on a double/And you don't let it trouble your brain/'Cause away goes trouble down the drain/Said away goes trouble down the drain."
The Ramseys enthusiastically agree."Well, alright."
A whistle sounds and Cleveland alerts everyone that it's "dub time." Then, the words "last night a DJ saved my life" are stretched out and manipulated.
To end the single, he continues to say that his sets can make any difficulty in a person's life."There's not a problem that I can't fix/'Cause I can do it in the mix/'Cause I can do it in the mix/In the mix, in the mix, in the mix, in the mix/In the mix, in the mix, in the mix, in the mix/In the mix, in the mix."
The single's colorless beats churn out the same Chic-lite rhythms heard a dozen times before in disco. Three of the four sound effects mesh well with the song. However, the sound of a toliet flushing turns out to be gross. It detracts from the single instead of enhancing it like the other sound effects.
Cleveland drones on in his section, mimicking the Sugar Hill's inflections. The Ramseys' shy vocals lack any giddiness or fun.
"Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" fails to pick up steam and becomes stagnated early on in its 5 minutes, 40 seconds.
