Music Review: Ray J "One Wish"

Ray J

One Wish
Album: Raydiation
Year: 2005

Ray J can't accept that he and his grade school sweetheart have drifted apart in the screechy "One Wish."

Suave keyboards open the single, setting a gentlemanly tone. In the first intro, Ray J asks if he talk for a moment. Then, he literally, takes a full minute for the intro. He thinks about the memories he had with his girlfriend. They were inseperable. On the weekends, they would drive. They didn't have a specific place in mind. But they would enjoy the time spent together talking. Meanwhile, in the background, he asks for a second chance to correct the mistakes he made. They take a blanket outside and sleep underneath the stars. They would watch the sunrise in the morning. In the evening, they would picnic and watch the sunset. He reminds of her of the compliments and the loving gazes. His life was perfect with her in it. All he wants is to enclose her in his arms. If he could have one wish, it would be to get back together with her.
"Can I talk to you for a minute/I be thinking to myself/We had a lot of good times together (come on, baby, come on darlin')/We did everything together/Oh, remember when we would wake in the morning and just get in the car and roll on out (all I need, all I need, is a chance to make it right, one chance, all I need, all I need, is one chance to make it right/Remember when we would watch the sunrise and watch the sunset (all I need, all I need, is a chance to make it right)/Remember all the things we meant to each other (all I need, all I need, is just one wish)/Damn, I miss those days (one wish, one wish)/If I could, if I could just hold you in my arms (all I need, all I need, is just one wish)/It feels so good (one wish, one wish)/One itty, bitty wish/If I could just have one wish."

The keyboards fade into a self-pitying piano and another spoken intro. In it, he says he doesn't know what happened to the relationship he had with his girlfriend. He thought everything was great between them. He was devoted to her and told her minor detail about his life.
"Damn baby/
Just don't understand where we went wrong/I gave you my heart/I gave you my soul/I gave you."

He has kept score during the eight years they were together. He shoots back that he was the one that said "I love you" first. He can recall the day perfectly. They were at her house. While they were watching tv, he said it. Her mother was so happy. She liked him a lot. His ex-girlfriend argues that they were really young and didn't even know what love was yet. He admits to being immature. He adds that he would like have a genie to grant him his wish.
"As a matter of fact I was the one who said I love you first/It was about eight years ago, don't act like you don't know/We were sittin' at home in your mama's livin' room/'Cause we couldn't be alone/See your mama knew I was something else, she knew how I felt/
Back then we were in school; and that's your favourite excuse/Growin' up I was a fool; and I can't lie, I'm missing you/Listen and don't trip/I think I need a bottle with a genie in it/Here's my wish list."

In the pre-chorus, he says his first wish would have the perfect romance. For his second wish, he would have her love him back. For the third wish, he says that it's not needed. He just needs only one to come true.
"First one, I would create a heart changing love/Second one, I'll take yours and fill it all up/Third one, but I don’t need a lot of wishes cause I’ll be okay if I get one."

In the chorus, he says his other ideas for wishes would be that they would be best friends in love. It would be just how they started. Another one would be for her to be his girlfriend. His vows to care for her and not to get jealous. Another possible wish would be to escape to the middle of nowhere and have sex. Then, she would get pregnant and they would be a family. They would marry. It would be like how he always imagined it.
"If I had one wish, we would be best friends/Love would never end, it would just begin/If I had one wish, you would be my boo/Promise to love you, trust me I'll trust you/
If I had one wish, we would run away/Making love all day, have us a baby/If I had one wish, I’d make you my whole life/And you’d be my wife, make it right this time/If I had one wish/One wish, one wish, one wish/
One wish, one wish, one wish/One wish, one wish, one wish/One wish, one wish, one wish."

In the second verse, he asks her if magic would work. He says if wishing is what he has to do, then he'll start looking for the magic genie. Once he is able to find it, he will have her for certain. She would be giving him hugs and kisses. She rolls his eyes at his effort to win her over again and says he's being childish. He says he's not. He simply wants to start over again. Without her, he would go mental and need to be checked into a hospital.
"Now tell me is this the only way I can get you right back in/
If so then searchin' I’ll go, then I can have you for sho'/Then you’ll be loving me, holding me, kissing me/
So girl don’t tell me what I’m feeling is make believe/I swear if I lose a second chance with you/I wouldn’t know what to do/I’d probably check myself into some kind of clinic/I couldn’t be alone because without you I’m sick/Here’s my wish list."

The pre-chorus is sung again.

The chorus is sung again but thankfully, the last half ("one wish, one wish") is gone.

In the bridge, he once again says he didn't know why they broke up. He says despite the fact that they are adults now, he still cares for her.
"I don’t even know how we ended upon this road/
And, even though we are grown, girl I just want you to know."

The chorus is sung twice to close the single.

In "One Wish," an otherwise normal request becomes absurd. Ray J exists in fantasyland. First, he believes that he could really find a genie and willing to go all over the world for it. Later, when he mentions that without her, he would be in need of psychariatic help, it's believable. He's halfway there already. Ray J's delusions are the least of his problems, however.

His clinginess and unwilling to let go of an old girlfriend is also pathetic. He doesn't realize she has changed over the years and discovered that they are now different. They are not kids anymore. Ray J thinks their relationship will be like when they were 12. However, it won't be. They are becoming adults. His ex-girlfriend knows he has a lot of growing up to do and that she can find someone who can be a better match for her. Ray J, however, has latched onto her for dear life. His co-dependency is alarming. Is she the only friend he has had over the years? It's likely to be so. Once she's gone, so is his life.

Ray J's shrill vocals cause the song to be topsy-turvy. The notes go up and down unexpectedly. He seems to be out of tune with every note.

He should hope that the the newly revamped UPN show "One on One" stays around for a couple more years. It will occupy his time and hopefully, never allow him to make another album again.
