Music Review: Red Hot Chili Peppers "The Zephyr Song"

Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Zephyr Song
Album: By The Way
Year: 2002

Anthony Kiedis resolves to remain high in the hallucinogenic "Zephyr Song."

A drowsy guitar opens the single, setting a stoned tone. Kiedis asks his friend if he can write on his on hand with a pencil. He just told the funniest joke. He wants to remember it when he's sober. Also, he's hungry and right now, a pencil is considered edible enough. He has a kite that he wants to go out and fly. However, he can't find any string. But that loses his attention quickly and he asks his friend to get a flashlight. Then, his friend will spotlight anything he sees. He says that he's going to remain high for the rest of the day.
"Can I get your hand to write on/Just a piece of lead to bite on/What am I to fly my kite on/Do you want to flash your light on/Take a look its on display, for you/Coming down, no not today."

Further in the verse, Kiedis asks his friend if he has met anyone who told him what his future will be like. Then, he changes the subject to sex. He tells his friend that reaching an orgasm without any aid is the best way to go. He also recommends having sex standing up. He adds that it a guy can finally get a whiff of the scent of sex. After taking another hit from the marijuana cigarette, he passes it to his friend. He tells his friend he didn't put as much in as he usually does. He adds for him to take a hit and then give it to the person next to him.
"Did you meet your fortune teller/Get it off with no propeller/Do it up it's always stellar/What a way to finally smell her/Pick it up it's not to strong, for you/Take a piece and pass it on."

In the chorus, he exclaims to his friend to join him on his high. He feels as though he's in another dimension. The weather is eternally sunny and homes are always available. They will get there on the wing, which has grown on Kiedis.
"Fly away on my zephyr/I feel it more then ever/And in this perfect weather/We'll find a place together/Fly on my wing."

In the second verse, he tells his friend that his liberal friend is talking in confusing metaphors. He tells him to become a world-famous skater. It would be a cool job to have. His friend is getting a buzz. Kiedis says to stay on it. He'll be the pilot of his adventure.
"Riddlin' on, liberator/Find a way to be a skater/Rev it up to levitator/Super mainly aviator/Take a look its on display, for you/Coming down, no not today."

In the chorus, he adds that they will swim in his emotions. The world will float along.
"Fly away on my zephyr...we'll find a place together/In the water where the scent of my emotion/
All the world will pass me by/Fly away on my zephyr/We'll find a place together."

In the bridge, Kiedis "whoa's" and asks him if he has the same sensation when high. He asks his friend to reach that point.
"Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa, do you/Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah/Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa, won't you/Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah."

In the second chorus, he mentions that he feels immortal while high.
"Fly away on my zephyr...fly away on my zephyr/We're gonna live forever/Forever."

"The Zephyr Song" exempflies why drugs are bad. They make people think whatever they write or say is the best thing ever. The single is evidence that's it not. It's a bunch of non-sequitors said in a rhyming manner. There isn't any logic whatsoever. Also, it's not even interesting. The sentences are strewn together.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have made some memorable rock music. However, the drugs have taken on a toll. "The Zephyr Song" is literally, a wasted four minutes.
