Melvin Riley soothes his girlfriend's doubts regarding their relationship in the faithful "Love You Down."
Loving keyboards open the single, setting a respectful tone. Riley tells his girlfriend that age is a non-issue between. He doesn't have any intention of looking for someone his own age. It's important to him that she is dating him.
In the chorus, he says he will make love to her. It will prove to her that he's interested in solely her.
He assures her that he likes the touch of her lips. Although her friends think he's just sowing wild oats. To them, going out with her is a way to prove his manliness. He deflects their criticism by saying he's as good as guys in their 40s.
The chorus is sung twice.
The synthesizer has a gentle solo.
The first verse is sung again.
The chorus is sung three times. However, "even it takes all night" is replaced by "oh, oh.'s" For the third time, "you know it's going to be all right" is gone.
The electric guitar has a hungry solo. Riley murmurs that he will be able to please her.
Over echoing drums, Riley asks her if he can have sex with her.
The chorus is sung three times to end the single. However, it's adlibbed and varies from the original chorus. He says he's willing to give her his car and his house to show how much he means to her. He loves her for the way she is. Later, he adds that she treats him well and he appreciates it. He's so aroused by her that he is unable to handle it anymore.
In "Love You Down," Riley's fanciful vocals are adult and romantic. His intentions are true. He's not in the relationship to say he bagged an older woman. He loves her and it pains him that his girlfriend may be having second thoughts.
The single takes the non-cliched persceptive: an older woman dating an younger man. It's thought of as awkward and odd in society. "Love You Down" addresses it, albeit in a limited manner, and questions it. Riley is stereotyped as a horny young guy and not as someone who has feelings for her.
