Really dumb newbie question

Am I incredibly stupid or just missing some upgrade or something? Where are the Universalist and Industrialist parties as detailed in the manual? they don't seem to be on the list at the start of the game....

Like Mayito7777 mentioned, you need to upgrade to the latest build. In the initial retail version, the Universalists and Industrialists were left out (or is it the Populists?) You can download the expansion pack, which should be released sometime today. The bonus pack contains addons to the game, such as new ships, political parties, etc. and is highly recommended since it enhances the game experience. The Expanded Universe pack will contain redone game graphics, tweaks to the user interface, ship additions for good and evil players, trade centers to boost trade, and so on. Expect a download of five to eight megabytes.
