Hilary Duff discovers her self-esteem again in the impassive "Beat of My Heart."
The sound of a heart beating opens the single. Its sets an ordinary tone. In the pre-chorus, Duff's vocals are made distant by the keyboard. She says she's going to follow her own interests.
A disinterested Duff says she's eager to speak her mind and yield to her every desire. She wants to go clubbing. It's taken a long time but she finally likes herself. She feels herself blossoming. She's not used to her newfound confidence as of yet. She feels as though she can make it through anything now. She's realized it's ok to be herself. An overcompensating guitar strums at a feverish pace throughout.
The pre-chorus is sung again.
In the chorus, she says her confidence has strained her relationships with her friends.
In the second verse, she says she's over her depression. She's surprising people by being talkative and getting involved in activities again. She's not going to let herself be overwhelmed again. She's going to stand up for herself and take every opportunity she has. She wants to prove to people that she's not afraid to be different from them. She calls out other people for being fake. She tells them she won't put up with their crap. She's will not allow them to control how she feels about herself anymore.
The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.
In the bridge, an angry guitar and a goth piano interrupts. She says that she's only listening to herself from now on.

Duff is bored and simply going through the motions in the single. She lost her sauciness and ironically, her spunk. An underlying sadness is apparent. Duff seems to have checked out of her pop music career.
The bland electro pop is an insult to the genre. It's like spilling ramen on a Vivenne Westwood evening gown. Also, the chorus and bridge could've been fleshed out. The single sputters during the verses but then stalls by the chorus. By the bridge, nothing could've salvaged the song.
With an editor, a splashy hook and an energetic singer the "Beat of My Heart" would've been a blast.
