JoeUser - Code Optimization

It's all about speed!

After a very long absence of doing any work on JoeUser I am turning my attention to JoeUser for the next few days to give it some very much needed tender loving care.  I started working on some code optimization in an effort to help speed up the site.  I have already implemented several changes that should help improve JU's peformance.  And I will continue to to do more updates over the next several days.

However, I'm only working on code optimization and I am not doing any new features at this time.  I may try and hit a bug or two.  So if you 1 or 2 bugs that are simply driving you mad feel free to post them here and I will see if I can get to them.

Cool T-Man! It's been a little slow and sometimes I can't respond to blogs, my comments either go by the wayside or it's already posted and I end up double posting. Sometimes I have to totally log out and start all over. So any little bit you do helps and I appreciate it!

The Recent Articles (and maybe Top Articles) on all blogs are months old. It's just not updating when new articles are posted. Don't know if this is something you're aware of or if it's on your current plate, but it is something that drives me mad. HAHA! Thanks.

Is it just me, or is quoting acting funny since T-Man started monkeying with the code?

I get the nice "["quote"]" and "["/quote"]" (w/out the " " marks) with none of the selected text appearing in between.

Thanks for the feedback.  I will look into those issues.

first off,  i wanna commend you on what i'm thinking must be about 99% of the features which do work well here.   also wanna thank you for the whole package...even the stuff that's sometimes a lil shakey.  this is far and away the best site of its type i've encountered.

So if you 1 or 2 bugs that are simply driving you mad feel free to post them here

since you offered...if i post a comment to a forum article, but don't realize it needs editing until a subsequent comment has been added, it's necessary to go to the author's site to make revisions.   here's the error message:

Server Error in '/' Application.

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Testing from the main site.

Looks like quoting is working fine.  If anyone can reproduce let me know how.

Ok, I believe I have corrected this issue.

The notificiation of watched articles does not work all the time.

Hmm, this one could be a difficult one.  The reason is because the articles are syndicated around to other Stardock websites and not all those websites have the article watch system built into it.  So for an example. You are watching a particular article over hear on JoeUser.  But some replies to the article from the Stardock Support Forums.  The Stardock Support forums probably will not send you an email letting you know the article has been updated.

If you see an occasion where the watch is not working, let me know which thread and which comment was the last  you believe you read so I can look into this a little bit deeper and see if I can find out if that is the cause or not.

Here is one.

The only reason I know it was responded to is by checking it.  I got some notifications yesterday, but none recently.

Here is a better one.  I got no mail on it from my last post on the 8th.  Yet I happened to check it 10 minutes ago, and there were a lot more replies on it since then.

Guy,  Just to make sure you completely understand how the system works with Watch list.

1)  If you are the responder it won't send you an email.

2) If you check a post lets say at X time (like on a Monday)  and on Tuesday 4 replies are made and then you check it at Y time (Like on Friday).  You will only receive 1 email.  This is to prevent your inbox getting bombarded by notifications.  Once you re-read the post (on friday) your email sent flag is reset so the next reply that comes through will send you a new email.   Rereading the post will clear the EmailSent flag.

I pretty much figured that out. But maybe I can shed some more light. (And thanks for the info!)

I cannot get into Forums at work. So sometimes, I see the recent forum posts, and see an article that does not show up on the newest list. So I do the AID and read it in JU. And if I like it, I flag it. And I always get notified on those that a new reply is there (from the JU Forums, not JU regular).

Now, on my articles (I dont know about everyone's as I only regularly recheck mine - irregularly I should say), I always post in JU, not in forums (I check the Forum box - I am not sure how some get into the forums but do not make it through the recent JU list - I guess from another site of Stardock?). For Obvious reasons. Some people responding always seem to generate an email. While others, never do. Case in Point, the Conservative debate one. I got no notification that anyone was responding, yet Gideon and Andrew Brehm were having a good debate! I stumbled back on it (it hit the recent Forum list when I looked) and about 6 replies were there.

Now I am not sure about Gideon, but I am pretty sure that Andrew posts in the forums, and not regular JU. Yet, the only time I get a forum notification is as I stated above. When an Article is posted to a Forum, and not to JU itself (it is not in the newest Ju articles list).

Could it be something to do with posting in JU, and they are replying in the Forums? Just a hunch there, but I have been trying to figure it out.

You are doing a great job! I use to have to debug too! actually, I liked it better than documentation! Guck!

Now that definitely gives me some more insight to go on.  Its definitely possible that the problem is in the main JU code.  Now I have a better starting place to look.

By the way. I'm posting from the main JU site and not the forums.

I got this notice from the Main JU notice.  I have learned to tell where they come from. Thanks!

More insight (into the bug or feature). I do get multiple notifications of changes to some articles, even when I have not revisited them.  ANd I have gotten notification on some articles that I am replying to, when I am replying to (overlapping responses).  The latest was the Manopeace - A timely Quote.
