Music Review: Usher "Yeah!"

Usher, Ludacris, & Lil' Jon

Yeah!
Year: 2004
Album: Confessions

Usher hooks up with his ex-girlfriend's former best friend at the club in the enthusiastic "Yeah!"

Usher opens the single by giving a shout-out to Atlanta. Over a horny synthesizer beat, Lil' Jon grunts "yeah" as Usher whispers his name. Lil' Jon identifies himself. Usher then shouts "yeah!" several times.
"Peace up! A Town down!/Yeah, (Yeah!) OK!/(Usher! Usher! Usher! Usher!)/Lil' Jon!/Yeah, Yeah, Yeah! Yeah, Yeah! Yeah!/Yeah, Yeah, Yeah! Yeah, Yeah! Yeah!"

In the first verse, Usher says he's out with his friends at the club. They are trying to sneak into the VIP section. However, he stops when he sees a girl staring him up and down. She saunters up to him and starts talking to him. She asks him how he's doing and she talks about what's new with her. They decide to sit at a table and relax for a while. Lil' Jon interrupts with his approval. She starts getting explicit, telling him what she likes. Usher receives a warning from Lil' Jon that he's heading for trouble. The girl hears a song she likes and purrs for him to grind her.
"Up in the club with my homies, tryna get a lil' V-I, but keep it down on the low key, 'cause you know how it is/I saw shorty she was checkin' up on me, from the game she was spittin' in my ear you would think that she knew me/So we decided to chill(Okay)/Conversation got heavy, she had me feelin' like she's ready to blow!/(Watch Out! Oh! Watch Out!)/She's saying "Come get me! Come get me"/So I got up and followed her to the floor, she said "Baby, let's go"/That's when I told her I said."

In the chorus, Usher says that as they danced, he got an eyeful of her butt. It then clicks as to where he remembered her. She used to be a close friend of his ex-girlfriend. The girl is in ecstasy as she is yelling that she finally got him.
"Yeah (yeah) Shorty got down low and said come and get me/Yeah (yeah) I got so caught up I forgot she told me/Yeah (yeah) Her and my girl used to be the best of homies/Yeah (yeah) Next thing I knew she was all up on me screaming/Yeah, Yeah, Yeah! Yeah, Yeah! Yeah/
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah! Yeah, Yeah! Yeah."

In the second verse, she's convinced him to sleep with her. She's been hinting all night long. Usher's says she's hot. However, his conscience begins to nudge him. It is his ex-girlfriend's former best friend. It would be betraying her, even though their relationship is over. She may find out, thereby, ruining any chance of ever getting back together with her. Usher gets another eyeful of the girl's butt as she drops it down to the floor. He references the Lil' Jon hit "Get Low." She asks to stay for one more song, to which he obliges.
"So she's all up in my head now, got me thinking that it might good idea to take her with me/'Cause she's ready to leave (ready to leave)/But I gotta keep it real now, 'cause on a one to ten she's a certified twenty, but that just ain't me, hey/Because I don't know if I take that chance just where it's gonna lead/But what I do know is the way she dance makes shorty alright with me/The way she (get low!)/I'm like yeah, just work that out for me/She asked for one more dance and I'm/Like yeah, how the hell am I supposed to leave?/And I said."

After the chorus, Lil' Jon gives Ludacris his cue.
"Hey, Luda!"

Ludacris notes that his flashy, lime-green leisure suit will cause him to stand out. Women are eyeing him like meat. He admits he only wants to see the women naked. He says he only needs a good song to get a woman. He lives a pimp lifestyle. He arrived in a Rolls Royce and decided to use the Jaguar for another time. If the cars won't get a woman's attention, then he will simply hit on every single one. He'll show off his diamond-encrusted pinky ring. He buys them drinks. He adds that, like Usher, he likes women to have a healthy sexuality yet not to be bawdy and trashy.
"Watch out!/My outfit's ridiculous, in the club lookin' so conspicuous/And Rowl! These women all on the prowl, if you hold the head steady I'm a milk the cow/Forget about the game, I'm a spit the truth, I won't stop till I get 'em in they birthday suits/So gimmie the rhythm and it'll be off with their clothes, then bend over to the front and touch your toes/I left the Jag and I took the Rolls, if they ain't cutting then I put 'em on foot patrol/How you like me now, when my pinky's valued over three hundred thousand/Let's drank you the one to please, Ludacris fill cups like double D's/Me and Ursh once more and we leave 'em dead, we want a lady in the street but a freak in the bed to say."

After the chorus, Ludacris compliments Lil' Jon for his jiggly beats, Usher's sexy voice, and his own fluid rapping skills.
"Take that and rewind it back, Lil' Jon got the beat to make ya booty go (clap)/Take that and rewind it back, Ursher got the voice to make ya booty go (clap)/Take that and rewind it back, Ludacris got the flow to make ya booty go (clap)/Take that and rewind it back, Lil' Jon got the beat to make ya booty go (clap)"

The horny synthesizer closes the single.

"Yeah" spills over with sexual energy. The plucky syntheiszer exudes the sweat and eroticism in the club. Usher's vocals are lustful, if a bit self-concious. He seems uncomfortable in the intro advertising his name. Ludacris' bravado is too cartoonish to be offensive. But like most of his appearances, he becomes the real reason to hear the song. Lil' Jon, who narrates, is useless. He chimes in randomly and then disappears as suddenly. Thankfully, unlike most Lil' Jon produced singles, his role is minimized to a cameo.
