Music Review: Cyndi Lauper "All Through The Night"

Cyndi Lauper

All Through The Night
Album: She's So Unusual
Year: 1984

Cyndi Lauper watches her boyfriend as he sleeps in the selfless ballad "All Through The Night."

Enchanting synths open the single, creating an affectionate tone. Lauper says she stays awake during the night. She wraps herself in her boyfriend's arms and listens to him breathe. She cherishes the intimacy between them. Sleeping in the same bed is a new step for them. The peacefulness and safety is something she never experienced before. A loving glance is able to convey their strong emotions for each other.
"All through the night/I'll be awake and I'll be with you/All through the night/This precious time when time is new/Oh, all through the night today/Knowing that we feel the same without saying."

In the chorus, she says the past heartbreaks are forgotten and will never be brought up again. They are building a future together. It begins when they get married and will continue until death do they part.
"We have no past we won't reach back/Keep with me forward all through the night/
And once we start the meter clicks/And it goes running all through the night/Until it ends there is no end."

In the second verse, she hears the cries of lonely stray cats. She notes that although the stray cat is tough during the day, it still wants to cuddle up to someone at night. She remembers how she used to feel like the cat. The cats stay close to her apartment building, hoping someone will take them in and give them a nice home. It's likely they will stay outside.
"All through the night/Stray cat is crying so stray cat sings back/All through the night/They have forgotten what by day they lack/Oh under those white street lamps/There is a little chance they may see."

After the chorus is a metallic synth solo.

In the bridge, the synth whistles as Lauper sees her boyfriend's droop. Around 9:30 p.m., he usually begins to doze off. It's a moment she's begun to expect. It's also one she does not want to let go of. She feels privileged for knowing it.
"Oh the sleep in your eyes is enough/Let me be there let me stay there awhile."

The chorus is sung twice.

Lauper "oohs" to end the single.

Lauper does not take the intimacy with her boyfriend for granted. It has taken her a long time to find someone she can love completely without any fear or nervousness. She knows it's the same with him, too. She feels incredibly lucky. The people and cats comparison is intelligent and somber one. Like so many cats, people need to have a home and someone to care for them. However, most people do not get the chance.

The beautiful "All Through The Night" is personal and unsentimental look at romantic relationships.
