Music Review: Paulina Rubio "Don't Say Goodbye"

Paulina Rubio

Don't Say Goodbye
Album: Border Girl
Year: 2002

Paulina Rubio and her boyfriend share a tearful farewell in the crisp "Don't Say Goodbye."

Doting keyboards and a striking guitar open the single, setting a dulcet tone. The bridge begins the song. Rubio whispers that time naturally passes. Each every sunrise is another day closer to when they when will be together again. Their relationship is not even close to being over. It's another chapter. She assures him that she will be there for him and remain close to him.
"Don't say goodbye/The circle of the moon/The rising of the sun/We'll be together soon/Our story's just begun/Time will bring us near/I'll never be too far/Oh, baby, don't you fear/I'll always be where you are."

He brushes the tears off her face. She points out that while he can soothe her, he is unable to ease the hollowness she feels. They embrace tightly and hold on as long as they can. Out of the many people in her life, he is the one who has affected her the most. Regardless of their ambitions, they will find each other again.
"You can dry my tears/But you can't stop the pain inside/I'm trying to hide/As I hold you near/I know I have to pull away/You know that I can't stay/All of my life/No one has touched me the way that you do/Wherever I go/I know that the road will lead back to you."

In the chorus, she beseeches him to stay for one more day. She tells him that he will love him forever and he won't forgotten. She adds that they will remain together. When they talk on the phone, they will see the exact nighttime sky. All he has to do is imagine she's there next to him. However, she asks not to say the word goodbye. It will make his leaving real.
"So don't say goodbye/Don't turn away/It doesn't have to end today/Don't say goodbye/'Cause I will love you ‘til the end of time/Don’t say goodbye/We’ll never be apart/We’ll see the same stars/Just close your eyes/And I’ll be where you are/
Don’t say goodbye/‘Cause if you say that word/My heart won’t survive."

In the second verse, she asks him if she knows how much she loves him. She wants to remember his every movement and observes his mannerisms. She does not want him to fade in her mind. If she goes shopping or to work, she will think of their special times.
"Can you feel my love inside/The way that my body’s sighing/With your every breath/I try to memorize/Every move you’re making/So I’ll never forget/The way that you feel/Whenever your heart is beating with mine/Wherever I go/I’ll keep my memories of you inside."

After the chorus, the bridge is sung again. Then, Rubio says the lyrics in Spanish.

The chorus is sung once.

The beats stretch and run as she whispers "don't say goodbye" to close the single.

The mellow dance beat of "Don't Say Goodbye" undercuts the heightened drama in the lyrics. The single is more about the emotion of saying goodbye to a loved one than the farewell itself. Rubio is pained yet strong in her vocals. She understands that it's not a break-up. However, she is still saddened to see him leave her. The songwriting developed a mutual, loving relationship which adds tenderness to the single.
