Don't Go
Album: Upstairs at Eric's
Year: 1982
Alison Moyet, lead singer of Yaz, is intrigued by a mysterious man in the couth "Don't Go."
Volant synthesizers and vivid drums open the single, setting a mercurial tone. Moyet remarks that she finished dinner with her friends in the city. She walks in her apartment and places her coat on the rack. She hears the shuffling off feet on the floor. When she looked to see who it was, she is shocked. The man is gorgeous. She is salivating at his roguish smile and his swagger. She's uncertain of how to react. However, she says his feelings for her will help her.
The synthesizers turn questioning as they segue into the chorus
In the chorus, Moyet says that now that her dream guy has found her, she's not going to let him get away. She's already in love with him.
The volant synthesizer has a brief solo.
An aggressive Moyet tells him to give her his love. She asks him to make love to her. She felt overcome with emotion that she thought she was going to pass out. However, after her sexual needs met, she's glowing.
Another questioning synthesizer solo follows the chorus.
After the chorus, synths circle and bend. Then, it returns to the pre-chorus and chorus melody, respectively.
In the third verse, she recounts the day she met him. The guy said he was a heartbreaker. She didn't believe it then, but she does now. Once he leaves her, she will be a wreck.
The chorus is repeated eight times to end the single.
In "Don't Go," the lyrics are secondary to the beats. The two minutes and 49 seconds zip by
The shaded beat matches Moyet's anguish. The beats, defiant and secretive, suggest a noir, metropolitan atmosphere.
For Moyet, a fantasy of hers has finally come true. The guy she's been dreaming about magically appears in her home. However, her fantasy has some negative parts she wasn't anticipating: he's a wanderer and only there for a short time. She knows he will leave one day and she dreads the day it will happen. Once he leaves, her fantasy is broken and nonexistent.
