Music Review: Roxette "Listen To Your Heart"

Roxette

Listen To Your Heart
Album: Look Sharp!
Year: 1989

Marie Fredriksson, lead singer of Roxette, cautions a friend to consider her true emotions in the compassionate "Listen To Your Heart."

A fretful piano begins the single. Fredriksson notices her friend's smile is a bit off. She senses that her friend is no longer in love with her with her boyfriend. When she sees him, she simply gives him a small smile and a quick hug.
" I know there's something in the wake of your smile/I get a notion from the look in your eyes, yea/You've built a love but that love falls apart/Your little piece of heaven turns to dark."

In the chorus, Frediksson tells her to stay in the relationship. He loves her and it's her feelings she can count on. She doesn't understand what brought on this sudden change of heart. However, she wants her friend to think through her decision to leave him.
"Listen to your heart when he's calling for you/Listen to your heart there's nothing else you can do/I don't know where you're going and I don't know why/But listen to your heart before you tell him goodbye."

Her friend is uncertain if she wants to be with him. The good times were such a long time ago. They've grown up and changed. She travels a lot for her job. He works late during the weekends when she is home. They mostly talk over the phone. Even then, the conversation is short and general. She feels like she's seperate from him.
"Sometimes you wonder if this fight is worthwhile/The precious moments are all lost in the tide, yea/They're swept away and nothing is what it seems/The feeling of belonging to your dreams."

After the chorus, an electric guitar has a restless solo which segues into the bridge.

In the bridge, she says her friend and her boyfriend are afraid to discuss their problems. They can't articulate it. They can't admit their conflict. It will be damaging the illusion that their relationship is still as strong as it was before.
"And there are voices that want to be heard/So much to mention but you can't find the words/The scent of magic, the beauty that's been/When love was wilder than the wind."

The chorus is sung twice, with Fredriksson adding "take a listen" to it.

The fretful piano returns for a solo. Then, thundering drums accompany her as she sings "listen your heart" and "whoa-oh's"

In the single, Fredriksson tries to prevent her close friend from making a wrong decision. She's known the couple for a long time. She's heavy-hearted at the thought of them breaking up. Unfortunately, "Listen To Your Heart" borrows notes and chords from Heart's catalogue. It lacks distinction from any power ballads released during the late 80s.

Fredriksson's vocals are the highlight, though Her raspy voice is pleading and decisive. It gives the single its urgency. She is able to convey concern instead of being a meddler.
