GMail invites: as Hot as "Publisher's Clearinghouse"

I love my gmail account. Of my personal email accounts, it is by far my preferred option.

But after having the account for many months, I am amused by the occasional article offering "invites". While I got my account through such an article, I am pretty well aware now that all I would have had to do was ask if anyone had an invite and I'd have one just as quickly.

Now, this looked like smart marketing on google's part when it started the service. But now, it's just plain silly. There's no value to invites, and everyone I know has more of them than they know what to do with. It's time, in my opinion, for google to end the whole "invite" method of signing folks up and just start a signup link on their main page. But that's just my opinion.

By the way, if anyone needs an invite, I have a few (lol).

I agree... the invite thing was good at the start but it is just plain stupid now.

I think I got mine off an invite.  Not sure yet. I have only given it to one person so far, and so far it is spam free! (That was my son)

If Google were to send out as many invites as they have gotten others to do for them, they would have been accused of spamming.

At least i would like to know why google still are using gmail invites.

have heard that some people got zero limits on the number invites they can send out though its just a rumour.

It doesnt bother me though that they use the model they are using.

When someone invites someone else, the invitation is sent to their existing email address. It is simply a way to collect email addresses for spamming.

Just think.  It's been over a year and people are still talking about invites.  Would it be the same if it was just an open registration?

Not possible for Beta testing. How it would be if Window Blinds 5 Beta 2 becomes available publicly as a free version? Will Stardock do this? There is always something that cannot be opened for all.

While I feel lame for asking, I had considered moving my email over and now that I hear how much people like it....anyone want to invite me?

Gmail is an email service offered by Google - hence G-mail *GoogleMail* it's something simple, not super fancy like AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo *i use all 3 of those also! - the later 2 are my spam boxes * and you can even access Gmail using a PSP *it's so nice* if you want an invite, IM me on aol at gfcentral002, that way you don't have to post your current email on here *will need to send an invite to ya*

Spamming is smart?

It is, if you can get thousands of people to do it for you.

Spamming is smart?

In this case, NO...just conniving and underhanded, getting someone else to do their dirty work. No better than 'popping off' in an elevator before exitting and leaving the remaining occupants the blame eachother

I joined without an invite about 3 months ago. Sorry to burst any bubbles. I had found the sign-up link right on the page that talked about getting a g-mail account off of the extra's page. Just wanted to let you all know about it.

At least you got your account. since they changed to googlemail I've been unable to get an invite. I've never seen such a messed up system;-)

For some reason, my Send no longer works.  I just rechecked the settings and all are correct.  I will contact gmail in the am.

um.. PSP = PlayStation Portable...... the last major firmware update added a browser to it, and since it has built in wi-fi you can access internet, hence access gmail just as you would using firefox, opera, ie, etc. ..
