Music Review: Craig David "Walking Away"

Craig David

Walking Away
Album: Born To Do It
Year: 2002

Craig David lets his problems fester and won't confront them in the self-pitying "Walking Away."

An uneasy guitar opens the single, setting a withdrawn tone. David starts with the chorus. He's not going to deal with the disappointment he's feeling. He wants to fill a void in himself.
"I'm walking away from the troubles in my life/I'm walking away oh to find a better day/I'm walking away from the troubles in my life/I'm walking away oh to find a better day/I'm walking away."

In the first verse, he says people get the wrong impression of him. They think he's a pretentious jerk. They may have a conversation with him once. But they won't contact him ever again. David, however, views it as the other people being hardheaded and unwelcoming. Those people exaggerate his behavior and make it look like he's difficult. To save face, he says he's not associating with them anymore. Then, for some reason, says he's not going to go into the other people's flaws and moodiness.
"Sometimes
some people get me wrong/When it's something I've said or done/Sometimes you feel there is no fun/
That's why you turn and run/But now I truly realize/Some people don't wanna compromise/Well I saw them with my own eyes spreading those lies/And well I don't wanna live a lie, too many sleepless nights/Not mentioning the fights, I'm sorry to say lady."

In the second verse, his girlfriend has not stroked his ego enough. She tells him he's heard some things about him from other women. He responds that the other women are trying to manipulate her. For actually being in the same room with the women, he dumps her. He tells her she should've known those women had an agenda. He uses the same reason as he did with the other people: he doesn't want to fake a relationship.
"Well I'm so tired baby/Things you say you're driving me away/Whispers in the powder room baby/Don't listen to the games they play/Girl I thought you'd realize/I'm not like them other guys/'Cause I saw them with my own eyes/You should've been more wise/And well I don't wanna live a lie, too many sleepless nights/Not mentioning the fights, I'm sorry to say lady."

The chorus ends the single.

Once again, Craig David begs for sympathy and plays the victim. Whether it be about the public's perception of him to relationships, it's always someone else who did him wrong. In "Walking Away," he gets defensive and standoffish when someone even mentions a rumor they heard about him. His ultra sensitivity causes him to be rude and mean. If the people in the room do not say "yes" to everything he says, he rejects them. David's arrogant attitude and whining drag down the single.

David's voice is metallic throughout the single. It's as though the computer simulated what his voice would sound like.
