Katrina & the Waves

Walking On Sunshine
Album: Katrina and the Waves
Year: 1985

Katrina Leskanich, lead singer of Katrina and the Waves, finds out her long-distance crush loves her in the giddy "Walking On Sunshine."

An exhilarated drum and a jubilant horn start the single. Leskanich adlibs an "Oh! Oh yeah." She had an inkling that perhaps her crush liked her. He would brush his hand on her own or pay attention solely to her in their group of friends. She's eager for him to return home and give her a passionate kiss. He's been writing to her, telling her how much he misses her and what experiences his travels have given him. She wants to get the letter that says, "I will be coming home."
"I used to think maybe you loved me now baby I'm sure/And I just can't wait till the day when you knock on my door/
Now everytime I go for the mailbox , gotta hold myself down/'Cause I just wait till you write me your coming around."

In the chorus, she says that she's thrilled and overjoyed. She wants to share her happiness with everyone.
"I'm walking on sunshine , wooah/I'm walking on sunshine, woooah/I'm walking on sunshine, woooah/And don't it feel good!!/Hey , all right now/And don't it feel good!!/Hey yeah."

She almost gave up on him and was preparing to move on. However, with the recent news, she wants to stay home permenantly. She's ready to begin her life with him right now. Weekend or one day visits aren't going to cut it anymore.
"I used to think maybe you loved me, now I know that it's true/And I don't want to spend all my life , just in waiting for you/Now I don't want you back for the weekend/Not back for a day , no no no/I said baby I just want you back and I want you to stay."

In the bridge, the hyper guitar accompanies her as she says she's bursting with joy. The loving words she's received completed her fantasy.
"Walking on sunshine/Walking on sunshine/I feel the love, I feel the love, I feel the love that's really real/I feel the love, I feel the love, I feel the love that's really real/I'm on sunshine baby oh/I'm on sunshine baby oh."

The chorus is sung once.

She adlibs "oh yeah" until the end.

Leskanich can breathe easier, knowing her crush has feelings for her. Shcannot contain her mirth. It's unbridled, loose, and genuine. Coupled with the nonstop energy of the horns and drums, "Walking On Sunshine" is hard to resist.
