Music Review: Romeo Void "A Girl In Trouble..."

Romeo Void

A Girl In Trouble (Is A Temporary Thing)
Album: Instincts
Year: 1984

Debora Iyall, lead singer of Romeo Void, remembers a girl she knew who had an abortion in the ambigious "A Girl In Trouble (Is A Temporary Thing.)"

The single opens with a cultured saxophone which sets a metropoliation tone. Iyall begins that the girl wore a hardened expression. However, she's empathetic to others. To strangers, she has a guarded walk. She won't let anyone in right away. She needs to learn as much as them as she can. Then, she is able to say they are a friend.
"She's got a face that shows what she knows/She's heard every line/Tenderly she talks on the phone/There's a way to walk that says/"Stay Away!", and a time/To go 'round the long way."

She says the girl knows how to handle herself.
"A girl in trouble is a temporary thing/A girl in trouble is a temporary thing."

The saxophone has solo.

Iyall says eventually girls have to know when to defend themselves. They will need to be strong to get through it. Only after the situation is over they can cry and let it out. She says the girl had to think of her options -- have the baby and risk getting kicked out of her parents' house, put it for adoption and jump from foster home to foster home or abort it. She decides aborting the baby is the necessary thing to do. She has to think rationally and maintain control of her emotions.
"There's a time when every girl learns, to use her head/Tears will be saved till they're better spent/There's no time for her to be afraid/So instead, she takes care of business/Keeps a cool head."

Another saxophone solo follows. However, this time it's weary.

The first chorus is sung again.

The chorus is repeated three times to end the single.

Romeo Void singles are like finding an excellent rib restraurant in the middle of a dingy town. It's unexpected and arresting. Iyall is straightforward in her storytelling. She does not judge the girl's decisions nor she does try to influence them. She notes that women need to face their problems head-on and do what's best for themselves.
