Music Review: Kelly Osbourne "Shut Up"

Kelly Osbourne

Shut Up
Album:
Year: 2002

Kelly Osbourne thinks her voice is the only that matters in the obnoxious "Shut Up."

Osbourne retorts to her one of her parents that things need to be done her way. Immature drums accompany her. They berate her to stand up straight, calm down, and not to act like a spoiled brat. She scorns that she doesn't need anyone to tell her anything. She's not interested in anyone else's opinions but her own. Since she doesn't agree with them, she dismisses them as crazy. She hates being told what to do and being called on her whining.
"You say/I should do it differently/I don't/Necessarily agree/Stand up!/Sit down!/Be nice!/Did ya hear me ask for your advice?/Don't bother/Trying to tell me your beliefs/Your point of view is pretty screwed to me/Do this!/Do that!/On track!/Do me a favor and don't talk back!"

In the pre-chorus, she says her parents talk in circles, always saying the same things over and over. She complains that she has to get away from it. It's making her ill.
"Round and round/
But the conversation always ends where it began/Round and round/And I need a vacation/I got a headache from you."

She yells, demanding that her parents be quiet. She's tired of their pointless lectures. She blows off their attempts to take an interest in her life.
"Shut up!/Don't want to hear your voice/Shut up!/
I'm sick of all the noise/There's nothing you can say/That means a damn thing to me/Shut up!"

She mocks them talking to her by going repeatingly only saying "blah." She tunes out when people vent to her or tell her when something great happened to them. She snarks that it's a wonderful friendship. If anyone talks to her that's not cool, she'll put them down. She'll claim that they don't have a life and obsess about hers. She accuses them of liking the sound of their voice.
"Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah/That's what/It sounds like you said to me/You nag and you brag and I gag/There's so much beauty in what we have/You must/Have better things that you can do/Or does/Your life revolve around me too?/What you want/What I need/Oh please!/I think you get off/On hearing yourself speak."

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

In the second chorus, she adds that she prefers to be mean. She despises when people try to tell her she's wrong. She's not going to take anyone telling her to grow up.
"Don't want to be polite/It's messed up/How you always think you're right/There's nothing you can say/That's gonna change the way I am/Shut up!"

The song stops for a second. There's a brief moment of hope that song may be over. It's dashed when a self-indulgent guitar solo follows.

The pre-chorus, chorus, and second chorus are sung once more to end the single.

Kelly Osbourne is self-centered and callous in "Shut Up." It's ironic she says other people are selfish and rude when it's actually her. Her rebellion is more like a foot-stomping fit in which she's crying "pay attention to me! pay attention to meeeee!" It's unlikeable, vanity single.
