Music Review: Black Eyed Peas "My Humps"

Black Eyed Peas

My Humps
Album: Monkey Business
Year: 2005

Fergie receives expensive clothes and lots of attention due to her voluptuous curves in the
abominable "My Hump."

The single opens with an illustrious, jazzy saxophone, creating a classy tone. However, once the sample Sexual Harassment's 1982 cult hit "I Need A Freak" is piped in, it switches to a smutty atmosphere.
Wil.i.am asks her how she plans to use her body. Fergie answers that she's going to turn him on by showing off her ample butt and breasts.
"What you gonna do with all that junk?/All that junk inside your trunk?/I'ma get, get, get, get, you drunk/Get you love drunk off my hump/My hump, my hump, my hump, my hump, my hump/My hump, my hump, my hump, my lovely little lumps. (Check it out). "

Fergie relishes the gifts she gets from men she really doesn't like. She takes advantage of her looks, having men buy her designer clothes by Dolce & Gabbana, high-end purses by Donna Karan and Fendi and name brand jeans by Seven and True Religion. She's tried telling them she doesn't want it. But they don't listen and keep giving her clothes anyway. Fergie stopped explaining a long time ago and instead decided to take it as a compliment. She adds she's not committed to anyone. But she'll date whoever shows interest in the meantime.
"I drive these brothers crazy/I do it on the daily/They treat me really nicely/They buy me all these ice-ys/Dolce & Gabbana/Fendi and then Donna/Karan, they be sharin'/All their money got me wearin'/Fly gear but I ain't askin'/They say they love my ass 'n/Seven Jeans, True Religion's/I say no, but they keep givin’/So I keep on takin’/And no I ain't taken/We can keep on datin'/
I keep on demonstrating."

Fergie curtly says her body is adored by men all over. A slobbering Wil.I.am says he's basically giving his paycheck. Fergie brags that she has a sugar daddy.
" My love, my love, my love, my love/You love my lady lumps/My hump, my hump, my hump/My humps they got you/She's got me spending/(Oh) Spendin’ all your money on me and spending time on me/She's s got me spendin'(Oh) Spendin' all your money on me, on me, on me."

Wil.i.am wonders how she plans to use her butt. Fergie responds she's going to dance around him, shaking it.
"What you gon’ do with all that junk?/All that junk inside that trunk?/I'ma get, get, get, get, you drunk/Get you love drunk off my hump/What you gonna do with all that a**?/All that a** inside them jeans?/I’m a make, make, make, make you scream/Make you scream, make you scream/'Cause of my hump, my hump, my hump, my hump/My hump, my hump, my hump, my lovely lady lumps. (Check it out.)"

Taboo hits on a woman while at a club. He says they would make a great couple and have cute, pet names for each other. Then go out on dates and have sex. He uses Cocoa Puff cereal and milk as a eupheuism. It's approriately cuckoo.
I met a girl down at the disco/She said hey, hey, hey yea let’s go/I could be your baby, you can be my honey/Lets spend time not money/I mix your milk wit my cocoa puff/Milky, milky cocoa/Mix your milk with my cocoa puff, milky, milky right."

In Fergie's verse, she says that men are always touching her, even if she doesn't want them to. It bothers her and she slaps their hands off. She informs them she will make a scene and it's something they want to see. She's just having fun titillating them.
"They say I'mreally sexy/
The boys they wanna sex me/They always standing next to me/Always dancing next to me/Tryin' a feel my hump, hump/Lookin' at my lump, lump/You can look but you can’t touch it/If you touch it I'ma start some drama/You don'twant no drama/No, no drama, no, no, no, no drama/So don't pull on my hand boy/You ain’t my man, boy/I’m just tryn’a dance boy/And move my hump."

Fergie adds in the chorus that her most valued parts of her body is her butt and her breasts.
"My hump, my hump, my hump, my hump....In the back and in the front....(Oh) Spendin' all your money on me, on me, on me."

Wili.am's two sections are repeated again. However, this time he wonders what she's going to do with her cleavage. Fergie says she will make him beg for it.
"What you gonna do with all that junk?...What you gon' do wit all that breast?/All that breast inside that shirt?/I'ma make, make, make, make you work/Make you work, work, make you work/She's got me spendin'..Spendin' all your money on me, on me, on me."

For some reason, a piano begins to play. It's unassuming and out of place. Fingersnaps and a bit of bass soon enter the solo. The only redeemable moment in the single is cut short by Wil.i.am's repeating of "so real" 17 times.

"My Hump" is trash. Fergie's materalism and willigness to use her body for it is grating. Even worse, she's proud of degrding herself. At least the Black Eyed Peas picked an obscure song to sample. However, Sexual Harassment's provocative "I Need A Freak"has a forcefulness, intelligence and carnality Fergie can't even muster. Dig up the original instead.

My husband was singing this as I was making his breakfast this morning. When he started singing "my lovely lady lumps" I dropped an egg. He's 6 foot and about 200 lb., and he's singing about his "lovely lady lumps". Hahahahhahaahaha.

It's a horrible song, but very catchy. I was suprised to learn (from your post) that it's the Black Eyed Peas. It doesn't sound like them at all.

Even though im not a great fan of theirs but this song is really catchy.I think that instead of blaming fergie for being so degraded etc.,i would like to add that she had the guts to come out with on your face phrases. My body is my holy temple and all that crap is now outta the window, its my body, its my choice.
