Music Review: Janet Jackson "Someone To Call My Lover"

Janet Jackson

Someone To Call My Lover
Album: All For You
Year: 2001

Janet Jackson is determined to find her perfect match in the drab "Someone To Call My Lover."

The sample of America's "Ventura Highway" opens the single. Fingersnaps and some bass is added to it. Jackson has began touring again. There isn't anyone to talk to and she wishes she had companionship. She's ready to date again. Her friends advise her to be careful with who she meets. They say she gets caught up in the first kisses and immeditely gives her heart away. They tell her to not make the same mistakes as before.
"Back on the road again/Feeling kinda lonely/And looking for the right guy/To be mine/Friends say I'm crazy cause/Easily I fall in love/You gotta do it different J/This time."

In the pre-chorus, she fantasizes where her dream guy might be. He could be at the bar one night, sitting right next to her. He could drive by in a creatively painted car or bump into her while dancing at the club. She's imagining the relationship already: he will never want to leave her and be head over heels in love. He will want to marry her. They would go the park or snark on bad television shows together. She'll be what he's been wanting, too.
"Maybe we'll meet at a bar/He'll drive a funky car/Maybe we'll meet at a club/And fall so deeply in love/He'll tell me I'm the one/And we'll have so much fun/I'll be the girl of his dreams maybe."

In the chorus, she says that today may be the day. She's eager to find a guy to love.
"Alright maybe gonna find him today/I gotta get someone to call my lover/Yeah baby come on/Alright baby come in/Pass my way/I gotta get someone to call my lover/Yeah baby come on."

She chants "I I E I" over the America sample.

She's the type to buy them whatever they want and take them to fancy dinners. If they ever wanted to go Italy, she will take them there. Unfortunately, she's been taken advantage of. However, she thinks they are geniune and not using her for her money. She's been in many one-sided relationships. She has loved the guy with everything she could. Meanwhile, the guy didn't really care much about her. She's going to heed her friends' warnings this time.
"I spoil them when I'm in love/Given them what they dream of/Sometimes it's not a good thing/But I'm blind/I love hard with everything/Giving my all/More than they/
I'll take my friends' advice this time/I'll do it differently."

The pre-chorus, chorus, and "I I E I " chant is sung again.

A guitar solo, ripped straight from the sample, follows.

In the bridge, the beat weens itself from the America sample and finds some individuality. Jackson lists the qualities her man would need: quiet but willing to handle groups of people, be able to take care of her, intelligent, and touchy-feely. He has to be committed to her, as she will, too.
"My my/
Looking for a guy guy/I don't want him too shy/But he's gotta have the qualities/That I like in a man/
Strong, smart, affectionate/He's gotta be all for me/And I'll be too/You see happily."

The pre-chorus, chorus, and the "I I E I" chant is sung once more to end the single.

"Someone To Call My Lover" is simply a rehash of the America's "Ventura Highway" but with different words. The sample is left intact with the exception of some bass. While Jackson's music has relied heavily on samples, there was at least some creativity to it. They were weaved into the beat as a supplement. "Someone To Call My Lover" is the most unimaginative, laziest single Jackson has released.
