To escape Page Six, Us Weekly and the like, Hilary Duff goes to clubs in the conceited "Wake Up."
A vacant keyboard beat starts the single, setting a dense tone. Programmed drums clang noisily in the background as Duff complains about one of downsides of being a celebrity. She says that people come up to her and ask her why she lip-syncs. Sometimes they will point and laugh at her veneers. Duff snots it's all rubbish and totally made up.
She says she dances at the club to brush off all the mean people's comments. Her fame is so burdensome she must leave it behind for a while.Nondescript handclaps accompany her in the background.
In the pre-chorus, she dolls herself up before going out. She cakes on the makeup and calls her friends to set up a social night. She admits she's not perfect and still figuring things out. Rough days roll off her back. They are not fun, but it's a part of living.

She people watches as she visits the local, trendyclubs and designer boutiques. She sees people pushing through crowds, chattering on their cellphones as they rush to work. Everyone seems apathetic to her. They are not enjoying their lives. She recommends them a night of going dancing..

In the third verse, she adds strangers don't know what other people about and judge. People stare and wait for others to entertain them. She repeats the strangers have no idea what's inside a person.

While it may be real life for her, it's not for the average person.Usually, road trip songs involve meeting people who changed their lives. Duff is cold towards them and sticks only to her entourage.
