Start Me Up
Album: Tattoo You
Year: 1981
Mick Jagger is aroused by a charming woman in the salacious "Start Me Up."
A rugged but polished guitar solo opens the single. A vampish Jagger approaches an attractive woman. In a cocksure manner, he says that if she turns him on he'll lose control. He's been feverishly lately. His heart is pounding and when he sees her, he's about ready to explode.
In the chorus, Jagger compliments her. He tells her she reduces men to salivating, helpless animals. He assures he's confident and excellent in bed.
He tells her to not to be shy. He admits that she's probably had better. She can do whatever she wants. As he reaches the breaking point, he can feel eyes widen and lips pucker.
Jagger sings the chorus.
She's a bit much for him. He promises to reach her level in time.
He looks forward to having her in the future. He thinks she will make him kinkier. She could catch the eye of any man - even the dead.
The defiant sexuality of "Start Me Up" nearly crushes the single. However, it's Jagger's insecurity that's captivating. He can't believe this woman is screwing him. He knows he's not in her league and was likely unmemorable for her. Yet, he is able to stir enough interest in himself to grab her attention. The single's unexpected layers make it a must listen.

"If you start me up/If you start me up I'll never stop/If you start me up/
If you start me up I'll never stop/I've been running hot/You got me ticking gonna blow my top."
In the chorus, Jagger compliments her. He tells her she reduces men to salivating, helpless animals. He assures he's confident and excellent in bed.
"If you start me up/If you start me up I'll never stop/You make a grown man cry/Spread out the oil, the gasoline/I walk smooth, ride in a mean, mean machine."
He tells her to not to be shy. He admits that she's probably had better. She can do whatever she wants. As he reaches the breaking point, he can feel eyes widen and lips pucker.
"Start it up
If you start it up/Kick on the starter give it all you got, you got, you got/I can't compete with the riders in the other heats/If you rough it up/If you like it you can slide it up, slide it up/Don't make a grown man cry/
My eyes dilate, my lips go green/My hands are greasy/She's a mean, mean machine."
Jagger sings the chorus.
"Start it up/If you start me up/Give it all you got/
You got to never, never, never stop/Never, never."
She's a bit much for him. He promises to reach her level in time.
" Slide it up/
You make a grown man cry/Ride like the wind at double speed/I'll take you places that you've never, never seen."
He looks forward to having her in the future. He thinks she will make him kinkier. She could catch the eye of any man - even the dead.
"Start it up/Love the day when we will never stop, never stop/Never stop, never stop/Tough me up/Never stop, never stop, never stop/You, you, you make a grown man cry/You, you make a dead man ***/You, you make a dead man ***"
