Burn
Album: Confessions
Year: 2004
Usher leaves a failing relationship in the stony "Burn."
The sound of rain falling on a window opens the single. A weary keyboard then starts as Usher explains his feelings to his girlfriend. It sets an artificial, selfish tone.He says although he rather not break up with her, he has to. For him, there's no spark for him anymore. He loves he but he's not in love with her. Instead of dragging out the relationship, he decides to end it now.
In the first verse, Usher says their relationship hasn't been the same for several months now. They don't communicate as well. Nontheless, he puts the blame on her: he's willing to change his behavior, she's not. Since he's not going to get his way, he opts to bolt. He asks why should he be spending time with her when he's upset and distant? He has many important things to figure out. The relationship's not a top priority for him.
In the chorus, he adds he doesn't feel the same way about her anymore. He's not physically attracted to her, either. He has to let the relationship flame out. He's tries to convince himself he's doing the right thing for himself. Although he doesn't want to date his girlfriend anymore, he can't stand to see her with anyone else.
In the second verse, he's still hanging on to her. He's calling her on the phone despite being with his new girlfriend. He catches himself saying his ex's name to the new girlfriend. He asks for sympathy from the listeners. He realizes he made a hasty decision. He thinks of schemes to get her back and is lost without her.
In the bridge, he's confused by his emotions. He's the one that wanted to see other people and said there was nothing left. He didn't have any feelings for her. Now, he finds that he's upset because he can't have her. He heals his pain by going "ooh" and expects them to get back together.
The chorus ends the single.
"Burn" is all about what Usher wants. He tries to empathize with listeners. However, he's insincerity and immaturity shows it's more of a game, not actual feeling.

"Girl, understand why/See it's burning me to hold onto this/I know this is something I gotta do/But that don't mean I want to/What I'm trying to say is that I-love-you I just/I feel like this is coming to an end/And its better for me to let it go now than hold on and hurt you/I gotta let it burn."
In the first verse, Usher says their relationship hasn't been the same for several months now. They don't communicate as well. Nontheless, he puts the blame on her: he's willing to change his behavior, she's not. Since he's not going to get his way, he opts to bolt. "It's gonna burn for me to say this/But it's comin' from my heart/It's been a long time coming/But we done been fell apart/Really wanna work this out/But I don't think ya gonna change ya/I do but you don't/Think it's best we go our separate ways/Tell me why I should stay in this relationship/
When I'm hurting baby, I ain't happy baby/Plus there's so many other things I gotta deal with/I think that you should let it burn."
"When your feeling ain't the same and your body don't want to/But you know gotta let it go cuz the party ain't jumpin' like it used to/Even though this might bruise you/Let it burn/Let it burn/Gotta let it burn/ Deep down you know it's best for you except but you/Hate the thought of her being with someone else/But you know that it's over/You know that it was through/Let it burn/Let it burn/Gotta let it burn."
"Sendin' pages I ain't supposed to/Got somebody here but I want you/'Cause the feelin ain't the same find myself/Callin' her your name/Ladies tell me do you understand?/Now all my fellas do you feel my pain?/It's the way I feel/I know I made a mistake/Now it's too late/I know she ain't comin back/What I gotta do now/To get my shorty back/Ooo ooo ooo ooooh/Man I don't know what I'm gonna do/Without my boo/You've been gone for too long/It's been fifty-eleven days, um-teen hours/I'ma be burnin' till you return (let it burn.")
In the bridge, he's confused by his emotions. He's the one that wanted to see other people and said there was nothing left. He didn't have any feelings for her. Now, he finds that he's upset because he can't have her. He heals his pain by going "ooh" and expects them to get back together.
"I'm twisted cuz one side of me is tellin' me that I need to move on/On the other side I wanna break down and cry (ooooh)/I'm twisted cuz one side of me is tellin' me that I need to move on/On the other side I wanna break down and cry (yeah)/Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh oooh/Ooh ooh oooh (can ya feel me burnin'?)/Ooh ooh ooh oooh ooh oooh/So many days, so many hours/I'm still burnin' till you return."
The chorus ends the single.
