Okay, here's the deal.  It's okay for people to vent on THEIR blogs about things.  The main golden rule is that you may not put the person's real name or full handle into the title of an article (since JoeUser is so popular, what you write here ends up on Google pretty quickly).

That said, you post it to the forums and then it becomes our business.  When you make an article, by default it has a checkbox that says "post to forums too".  If you're writing something that is essentially a rant about some other user or anything else that really doesn't belong in a public forum, you need to uncheck that.

Right now, there's a glitch on JU where I cannot hide a forum post without hiding it from your blog as well.  So here's the deal: It's up to you to uncheck that "post to forums" option if you're about to write a rant about someone.  Otherwise, it's likely going to just go away entirely.

Question: My "Game for Ziggy" blog wasn't a flame (although it did bring him some negative attention). I put his name in the title to make sure that he saw it.

Was that a no-no?

If you still can, you should add "The On-line community survival guide" (Link) as your external link or mention it somewhere.

Just curious.  is the ban on Handles just for flames?  Or when we want to do a mea culpa or attaboy is that ok to name names?

I am spectacularly bad in assessing whether some rant I write is acceptable or not. And I always post to the forums.

Two of what I considered my most aggressive postings were put on the JoeUser front page though.

OTOH I always try to use clever titles (what I consider clever) and thus do not, I think, naturally tend to include other people's names in my titles.

Can somebody tell me when I become too personal?

What you write on your blog is your business. When you CHOOSE to have it on our forums, it becomes our business.  I will see if I can recover your blog item and make it only on your site.

Just another example of why you should always make your own copies. Don't expect it to last forever up here on JU, even if it's not a flame. If you care about what you've written, take your own steps to protect it.

My rule of thumb when posting on sites (and I learned this the hard way): Write you article, post or reply on a notepad type program like Notepad, Word, Wordpad, etc. while at the same time benefit from spell check and auto-recovery (Word) in case you PC doesn’t agree with what your typing. I believe that’s good advice.

I am, however, curious about something. I can understand when someone comes with a barrage of painful words and hits you in the most sensitive parts (your ego) that you will want to let the attacker know how it felt by retaliating and giving them a taste of their own medicine. But why use your blogging power to do so? I always thought that bloggers posted to express their feelings towards life and it’s surroundings. To give a piece of their minds about politics, sports, current events and technology. To share a piece of their life history (good or bad) with others. Sure people like the President of the US, movie stars and even the corner store will get bitten once in a while by these blogs. I think that blogging to insult or flame a fellow blogger is unnecessary, abuse of power, unneeded info, a waste of space, evidence of weak egos and worst of all childish. It is not my intention to insult anyone but that is just how I feel.

If you wanna wage a war of flames in a particular article then that’s fine. It’s entertaining and funny at times and no one else but those in that article have to deal with it and can always ignore it. But putting it for public display (like as the main story of a blog) is wrong and only throws more wood to the fire. And worse when the person being flamed can also create a flame blog of their own to fight back in turn filling the site with useless articles.

I thinks it was a good idea to post this article (suck-up) and that’s my 2 cents.

Might be a good idea to have the Forum option un-checked by default to prevent this sort of thing from happening unintentionally.

I agree, but in this case the person who started the flame-fest had me blacklisted on her blog so I was unable to respond directly.


I see, now you understand what I mean about abuse of power. I think that people like that should be punished by the moderators of this site. It is unfair to flame someone and then not give them the chance to fight back. Cowardly act if you ask me. By doing that the person admits that you are right and abuses his power so that you can't prove him wrong.

there's something spooky about the power to tear a human being a new one, especially from the safety of anonymity. it's pure power, like superman + invisibility.

draginol has to run the site, understood. beyond that, people can do what they want with the power of writing anonymously. but everyone should spend a minute thinking about the difference between writing something with your name on it and writing something under the guise of your untraceable alias. you may be a talented writer with a skill for stomping new holes, but anonymous venues are pretty cowardly locations for your efforts.

Personally, I dont mind TW. I really dont read many other blogs on here. I wouldnt even know how to spot it if it had my name on there. Marcie pointed it out to me, and that was after a couple of days...but of course, I got crap for not responding to it right away.
