Manic Monday
Album: Different Light
Year: 1985
Susanna Hoffs is having a hurried early morning in the resigned "Manic Monday. "
Wishful keyboards start the keyboards, creating the atmosphere of blissful sleep. Hoff wakes up to a blaring alarm clock, which interrupts her picture-esque dream of having her fantasy by her side. She crawls out of her bed and rushes to make her bed. Unfortunately, she doesn't have much time. "Six o'clock already, I was just in the middle of a dream/I was kissin' Valentino by a crystal blue Italian stream/But I can't be late 'cause then I guess I just won't get paid/These are the days when you wish your bed was already made."
Hoffs says it's the usual Monday routine. She wants it to be Sunday again, though. Then, she could go shopping, catch up on her television shows and relax. "It's just another manic Monday/I wish it was Sunday/'Cause that's my funday/My I-don't-have-to-runday/It's just another manic Monday."
Today, she reasons, she will make the 8 a.m. train. However, she is having problems deciding what to wear. Every business suit in her outfit has been worn several times during the past month. Should she opt for khakis or wear jeans instead? She finally arrives to work. But she's late. At 9:10, she arrives at the office. She prepares a fib but it's useless - her boss saw her come in late. "Have to catch an early train, got to be to work by nine/And if I had an air-o-plane I still couldn't make it on time/'Cause it takes me so long just to figure out what I'm gonna wear/Blame it on the train, but the boss is already there."
After the chorus, is the bridge. She wonders why her boyfriend decided to make love to her late around midnight last night. She's currently the only one in the relationship working at a steady job. She rationalizes she could easily find another one if she was late one more time. When he spoke in his low, sexy voice, she was unable to resist him any longer. It made her tired morning worth it. "All of the nights, why did my lover have to pick/Last night to get down/Doesn't it matter that I have to feed the both of us/Employment's down/He tells me in his bedroom voice/C'mon honey, let's go make some noise/Time it goes so fast when you're having fun."
The chorus ends the single.
The realistic "Manic Monday" is written with detailed descriptions of an average morning of a working person by Prince. Prince gives female singers a vibrant, meaty voice. For Susanna Hoffs, he brings out her natural vulnearability and a bit of cheekiness.
