I don’t understand why black people get so upset when white people use the word “nigger” especially when I hear black people throwing the word around amongst themselves.

Nigger, nigger, nigger.

There, I said it!

No pun intended, I just had to get it out of my system.

So what you are saying is that it is OK to use the word nigger, even on publicly broadcasted radio.

Dego is not nearly as offensive as the word nigger.

I would bet that there are more people black and white that would be offended hearing the word nigger on the radio than the word dego.

The origin of the word is in essence where it derives its meaning. On the other hand the word dego is not in the dictionary, nor can I find an origin for its meaning.

You obviously missed my point.

I'm not saying that the word dego is not offensive, but I am saying that it is not even in the same league.

You must be reading things invisible to everyone else.

Dego is not nearly as offensive as the word nigger.

Depends on who you are. To an Italian, it might be.

I would bet that there are more people black and white that would be offended hearing the word nigger on the radio than the word dego.

I would bet there are more Italians that would be offended hearing the d word as opposed to the n one.

I'm not saying that the word dego is not offensive, but I am saying that it is not even in the same league.

To you.

Oh, and an insightful for Gene. I've been trying to figure out how to say what you did about context for a couple of weeks now, but you have it down.

Furry - While you did not mention slavery specifically, that was the context of the comments you responded to. They were talking about slavery, you threw out a name as a follow up as supposed proof to the contrary. Rosa Parks lived through the civil rights movement, which is a different thing completely. You took one sentence out of the larger context to reply to.

A.D.D. Girl, it would have been nice if you listened to LW.  Your title is classified as a "hate" word by the Federal Government.  I request that you change it immediately and mark this as adult content.  It doesn't matter how you view the word, it's against the TOU:

By the way guys, it's spelled "d-a-g-o".

' Furry - While you did not mention slavery specifically, that was the context of the comments you responded to.'

* Sigh * Absolute codswallop, Zoomba. It's all there in black and white. Go back and read it.

1. Manopeace supplied a list of historical abuses against black people, including but not limited to slavery.
2. Little Whip responded to ALL of them, saying that ''There isnt an "African American" alive today that knows how it feels'.
3. I disputed this in respect of the last in the list ONLY, 'Do you know what it means to be denied the same rights as your white neighbours?'
4. drmiler challenged me to 'Name one!'
5. I named Rosa Parks.

But no - I must be at fault, because I provided an unsatisfactory answer to a non-existent question! Perhaps you should try understanding the CONTEXT (ah, there's that word again) next time!

Nowhere on the GLOBE does a person with black skin have a better standard of living or a brighter future than right here in the good old racist USA.

Very, very true....my old boss was Nigerian. He used to tell us horror stories of what life was like there when he was growing up. He and a few friends came to America as students in the 80s.
Get this----they intended to learn all they could about American democracy and our systems of justice and government, and go back to Nigeria to try and start a revolution. They all decided to stay, though, they loved it so much. They've been bringing their families over, a little at a time, ever since.

FYI

I changed the title of this article. It no longer is a word at all. It should be politically correct now, right?

Nope, YOU go read it. Let me refresh your memory:

Do you understand the feeling of being uprooted from your surroundings like a wild animal, herded onto boats taking you to a far off land, sold on an auction block like a hunk of meat? Do you understand what it means to be kept in shackles and chains, enslaved, treated worse than the pet dog? Do you understand how it feels to be 'freed' by a government decree only to still be hated and treated not as an equal? Do you know what it means to be denied the same rights as your white neighbors?

Sorry but that's "slavery" he's talking about, not discrimination! When you replied on #9 all you quoted was the last line. Thereby changing the "entire" meaning of mano's reply. Now given all that and couple it with the fact "we" were referring to slavery and not discrimination, the Rosa Parks reply does not apply. Sorry about that.

Dr... if you look at my entire quote...

Do you understand the feeling of being uprooted from your surroundings like a wild animal, herded onto boats taking you to a far off land, sold on an auction block like a hunk of meat? Do you know what it means to be denied the same rights as your white neighbours? Did those things upsetyou even though you might understand it all?

It is not just slavery I was referring to, so Furry was correct with her answer of Rosa Parks. Ms. Parks is a perfect example of a person fighting an injustice without lowering herself to the low life level of her opposition. Both sides of the struggle can learn from her example instead of the way the 'game' is played today; abusive namecalling and ridiculous accusations.

drmiler wades back in, brandishing a limp stick of celery ...
'When you replied on #9 all you quoted was the last line.'

Exactly. It was EXPLICITLY the last line to which I responded, and nothing else. Little Whip had the sense to see and the good grace to acknowledge this. (Thanks, LW.) You obviously have neither, drmiler.

Manopeace's reply was a list of grievances, to which LW provided an all-encompassing reply. I disputed the reply in respect of ONE of the grievances. LW has since said that she meant to leave out the statement to which I responded, and I accept that. But to say this...
'Thereby changing the "entire" meaning of mano's reply.'
... is codswallop, drmiler.

Are you running on diminished brain capacity or are you being deliberately obtuse? In reply #13 LW very specifically refers to "SLAVERY"! And my reply (#17) is ALSO referring DIRECTLY to slavery! So take your limp celery and find something else to complain about. I also think that if you were to ask LW what she was refering to in reply #8. That she would tell you "slavery".

'Are you running on diminished brain capacity or are you being deliberately obtuse?'
Diminished brain capacity - I find I don't need to employ more than a fraction of my full mental abilities when dealing with you, drmiler!

'In reply #13 LW very specifically refers to "SLAVERY"! And my reply (#17) is ALSO referring DIRECTLY to slavery!'
Hint to drmiler: Which came first - reply #13, reply #17 ... or reply #9?
That's right, replies #13 and #17 which you cite above came AFTER the post of mine to which you appear to take such apoplectic exception. Whatever you chose to go on and talk about SUBSEQUENTLY is not at issue.

'I also think that if you were to ask LW what she was refering to in reply #8. That she would tell you "slavery".'
I've no doubt. Call me a traditionalist, but the convention here is to post what you mean in the first place. As you already know, LW has acknowledged she made a mistake in reply #8. I responded to it at the time and as it was posted - hardly unreasonable, I would have thought.

'So take your limp celery and find something else to complain about.'
Er ... but YOU are the one doing the complaining!

Do try again, dear boy!

Just for the record, I find the title of your article offensive, and the l337 version of it even more so. It's almost like you're sticking your tongue out to see how far you can go.

But whatever, free speech and all that right? Delete my comment if you like.

' Just for the record, I find the title of your article offensive ...'
While I agree, xtine, personally I find the content far more disturbing - particularly the statement 'I don’t understand why black people get so upset when white people use the word “nigger”'. She is either very ignorant of black American history or in denial.
